Q: Lion - Horrible MacBook Pro Battery Life

After upgrading to Lion, my MacBook Pro battery life has been severly affected. After 1.5 hours of light web browsing, my battery has decreased to 40% from 100% after charging all night.

Notes: Spotlight completed indexing the hard drive over night, and the laptop remained plugged in charging. The fans seem to be running normally, not at a higher rate. The backlight is at 50% brightness.

Thoughts?

10.7.1 does not help my MBP either.

However, it should not be any surprise as the overview made no mention of it.

I think a lot of us are tettering on whether to go back to SL or not.

Hopefully the next update will come out shortly.

Calibration will not help if the fans are going crazy. Guess what is consumming the power?

I'm running 10.7.1, I did this newest test after 10.7.1 but to be perfectly honest I think the results have nothing to do with it, I felt improved battery life for some time and even in release notes for 10.7.1 there is no mention of battery fix.

Although my battery health (by iStat widget) went from 92% to 95% after installing 10.7.1. which is certainly interesting.

    Battery held 4:16:30 hours.

    Applications used:

    iChat

Safari (news webs and 10 mins of youtube)

    Mail

    iCal

    Microsoft Word

    Vodafone Mobile Broadband

    USB 3G modem plugged in.

    _________

I used to have 2 hours max. I believe better results are due to the re-calibration as stated above. I didn't do it on purpose, but my Mac went out of juice several times past weeks.

I'm still thinking I used to have 5 hours+ with same applications running on Snow Leopard, now it's bit over 4. But at least it's not 2...

However my Mac is still heating more than it used to (quite warm right now with these apps) and mdworker is still working on 5-10% CPU all the time (right now using 2.38 GB of virtual memory ). I never managed to fix that in any other way but turning spotlight off.

Yeah, I'm having the same problem on a 2011 MBP i7, blah blah blah. I tried the SMC reset, but haven't had the opportunity to observe the results. I have a feeling this is going to be a thing until the new MBPs are released. That is, it'll be fixed with the new ones, and the 2011s will just have to suffer. heh.

My battery is non existent. Runs for a little over an hour. Currently the fans are running even when it's in sleep mode. This is not the type of tethering capabilities I was wanting in a laptop lol

I've posted in other threads that there are performance issues which still need to be resolved in Lion.

Unfortunately, all it does is pull out the fanatics that state that they have no problems and there are only a "few" instances.

Nice to know there are so "few" of us.

Hopefully there will be a fix soon.

I think my Macbook Pro (15" early 2011 - 2.2GHz i7 / 8GB RAM / 128 GB SSD) is the worst affected among the bunch. It lasts me ~ 2hrs on casual browsing (used to last 5hrs on SL) and ~ 45 min - yes that's right 45 MINUTES- when I compile code (using 7 threads for ~ 20 min) while having a couple of terminal windows and 3-4 tabs in firefox open (used to last ~3hrs on SL). It sips out battery faster than a thirsty elephant sipping out water on a 110 degree day. I tried everything suggested in the thread but nothing seems to improve it.

Well I hate to tell my story since I see so many members are stil having the problem.  I wish I could be of some service but I don't know what else to say.  I updated to the 10.7.1 plugged my mbp until it was full charge and removed it from the plug last night around10:30pm...  Since then I have left the mbp unplugged and in sleep mode when I'm not on it and I still have 2 hours and 35 minutes remaining before empty.  I wish there was something I could tell you guys but I think my problems have been solved with the update.  I was getting around 6 to 7 hours off a full charge now I think it is back up to normal.  I will post more details as I continue to investigate the performance of the mbp with 10.7.1...  Good luck everyone!!!

I have opened a new discussion regarding this issue, where I believe that the whole battery drain is related to a more volatile handling of the fans compared to actual temperature. Hopefully someone can give some more evidence to this issue:

A question to all. Has anyone done and "Erase and Install" of Lion and experinced the same battery issues or better battery performances? Am interested because I did an upgrade from SL to Lion and had battery issues like most others then dumped Lion and reinstalled SL ( where I am now ). For sure, I will wait for 10.7.2 or .3 before trying another upgrade. That is unless and erase and install is proven to resolve the ongoing battery issues in the thread.

I bought my MBP 2 months ago. when it was on SL, it had poor battery life (4.5 hrs max. Upgrade to Lion made no difference. Even had as low as 1.5 - 2 hr battery life from full charge. *(on a side note, i did notice once in my activity monitor that safari using adobe's flash plugin was running my fans nonstop, after shutting down the tab using flash (facebook) battery life dramatically went up, not to 7 hr battery life, more like 4)  Sent it in to apple, they replaced the battery and clean installed Lion. At first it did not seem to make a difference, but after more use(and letting the battery drain all the way until it puts it to sleep) it seems to be improving. I'm averaging over 6 hrs now, up to 6.5 so far.  Thought this might be worth sharing. Hopefully it holds at 6-7 or improves.
