Q: Lion - Horrible MacBook Pro Battery Life

After upgrading to Lion, my MacBook Pro battery life has been severly affected. After 1.5 hours of light web browsing, my battery has decreased to 40% from 100% after charging all night.

Notes: Spotlight completed indexing the hard drive over night, and the laptop remained plugged in charging. The fans seem to be running normally, not at a higher rate. The backlight is at 50% brightness.

Thoughts?

Waiting would usually be fine, and i have been waiting for a long time. However, the longer i wait, the more my battery health decreases. I don't know why it is...Before Lion, i had 90%, now i have 84%!

How to check battery health percentage?

    Thank you.

At 76%, the battery time showed 6:15 and after just few seconds, it showed 3:15

    Fluctuation is very high.

    Thank you.

    Ragu

An app called 'Istat Pro'. It will tell you your fan speed/ health of battery etc.

    Thanks,

    Tom

This problem seems to be linked with the dynamic switching of the graphics cards. If your machine only has an integrated card then this is of no help. I have a discrete and integrated card and with dynamic switching enabled Lion tends to use the discrete card almost always, even when doing light tasks. The gfxcardstatus app allows you to see which card is active and also allows you to manually switch to the integrated card. If I do this then I get ~5h battery life when doing light browsing.

Sorry, but no! If you read the thread completely, you will see people have tried that already. Me too....

It´s a BUG in Lion, and it si Apple´s resbonsibility to fix it ASAP. But they dont seem to care about it...

If you are new to this forum please read back and you'll find many different exercises but unfortunately all of them eventual fail. Lion has a BUG and Apple must fix this.

Not sure what we as a group can do to help our self but I'm sure that sure that we can make a lot of noise if necessary! Lets wait and see will 10.7.2 bring the fix and if that one fails too we (as a group) should think of a new way to approach Apple.

A good example of a very good noise is Vodafail in Australia. Started by a single person as a protest and resulted in Vodafone loosing over 200.000 post paid customers (literally) and God knows how much of $$$. I don't think that Apple would be happy with similar PR job!!! So far Apple behaves identically as Vodafone (before Vodafail). Soooo ignorant wasting our time and money.

I agree. But also, if you look back through this forum then you will see Apple are researching into what people's problems with this are. So at least they seem to be trying, but what i don't understand is why they don't let us know that they are aware of the problem. That's the most frustrating part.

I also agree with the waiting of 10.7.2, and then we as a forum should try to take action and make it clearly known to Apple and put it in the public eye. However, it won't be as easy as simply stopping your contract as we already have physical possessions bought from Apple.

I just want to mention that this is just not a problem with Lion.

I took my macbook to the apple store and they run some hardware test. Everything showed ok, including the battery.

Before going to the apple store, I installed SL and all the udpates. The computer was very lean with just Ilife but still showing the same battery problem as it did with Lion.

The Genius guy replaced my battery only because I had a case number with Apple, otherwise he would have not done it.

Guess what fellows, I still have the same problem even with the new  battery! 3:00 3:45 max.

I'm not a expert but I think something happened betewen 10.6.7 and 10.6.8. One of those updates when Apple was priming (getting ready) the macs for Lion. What upsets me is that even going back to SL the macbook acts the same way as Lion as far as the battery goes.

Good thing the macbook is not my primary computer but it's hard to settle for this.

    Regards

Yesterday's EFI Firmware update 2.2 seems to have improved my battery life (still jumps around like a gerbil on crack but the numbers are higher) - anyone else see the same, or is it just wishful thinking on my part?

I didn't have an EFI firmware update. Not even sure what it is to be honest. I have a 13" macbook pro if that's relevant?

    Should i have had it?

It was an automated update for me (Lion 10.7.1).
