10.6.8, ARD admin 3.5 and ARD 3.5.1 REPORTING BROKEN

Dear all,

Have just upgraded to ARD admin 3.5 on our admin machines (10.6.8) and ARD 3.5.1 on our client machines (10.6.8).

We are able to control and observe all client computers, send Unix commands but none of the reporting (software versions, file search) methods are working - the report for the client computer never gets past 'Transferring report'.

This was all working just fine using ARD admin 3.4 and 3.4 client.

Have tried deleting plist files (server and client), rebuilding prefs, re-adding client computers but nothing has resolved the issue we are having (same on a number of admin machines).

It looks like Apple haven't done enough testing with this version of Apple Remote Desktop.

For what it's worth, I experienced the same problem running reports on various client systems (10.4.11-10.6.8) after upgrading my ARD admin system from 3.4 to 3.5. My admin system is also running 10.6.8 (No Lion in this equation).

I followed the ARD removal guide on my 10.6.8 admin system (ignoring/replacing the outdated references): http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2577

After uninstalling both the admin and client portions, I reinstalled both 3.4 pieces from the downloads here:

http://support.apple.com/downloads/#remote%20desktop%203.4

The ARD 3.4 version installed normally and all my prefs were completely reset. I saved a copy of UnixCommandTask.plist so I wouldn't lose all my unix command templates.

Reporting now works. I can even run reports and control the 3.5.1 clients that I had updated before I learned of the reporting problem.

Regards.

Hi Lyle,

I've re-removed both the client and the admin utility. Then, I tried installing from the support download link. Unfortunately, I'm unable to install the admin utility because it is an "upgrade" installer. I (stupid me) don't have a readily accessibly copy of any pre 3.5 remote deskop admin utility.

So, even though your instructions were very hopeful, I was unable to follow them because I couldn't install ARD Admin 3.4. I've even tried downloading from the App Store, and that defaults to the newest version.

Thanks for the info, however. And since the problem affected you as well, I would recommend you file a bug report.

Best,

Allen

Hi Allen,

Having the original 3.0 installer does give me a bit of an advantage. If you're really in a bind, I saw an ARD3 disk for sale on eBay for $49.

If you have a relationship with an Apple reseller they might be nice enough to lend you the media. This would be your safest and cheapest choice.

As an absolute last resort, so long as you are a legitimate licensee who has lost his media, there are .iso and .dmg images floating in the torrent world. Of course, you'd want to be very careful taking that path (embedded malware, etc). Avoid any downloads that include an illigitimate license. You may already know all this, but I prefer to add my disclaimers.

If you really want to have an impact on getting this fixed, I'd say forget the bug report - the one ARD developer already knows about the problem anyway. I'm guessing the biggest impact would be from a review on the App Store. A simple "Don't buy version 3.5 if you want to do reports!" would likely get more attention (if they don't remove it).

Good luck.

Lyle may be on to something, but I was unable to follow his procedures, and Remote Desktop 3.4 insists that I update my Admin software on my laptop because it finds evidence of 3.5 _client_ software on my computer.

I have client systems that are running 3.4, and I could get reports from them when I was running the 3.4 version of Admin on my laptop. Once I upgraded ARD Admin on my laptop to 3.5, I could no longer get reports from any clients, whether they're running 3.4 or 3.5.1 of the client software.

Regarding Lyle's procedures:

I followed the ARD removal guide on my 10.6.8 admin system (ignoring/replacing the outdated references):http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2577

1. I don't have a standalone ARD admin system; ARD Admin is installed on my laptop.

2. I couldn't figure out what outdated references to ignore or replace. I just ran the Terminal commands, and everything seemed to uninstall according to plan. Caution: the removal _did_ wipe out my existing ARD database (but that was okay by me).

3. I skipped "unininstalling the client portion" since I'd read elsewhere that it was "part of the operating system" (and thus not removable by casual means). I _did_ shut off Remote stuff in the Sharing preference pane, though.

4. I reinstalled the Admin package from my 3.2 CD, and then updated it with the 3.4 Admin download. When I opened the "finished" 3.4 ARD software, it immediatelyprompted for an update, since it found evidence of a 3.5.x client on my computer. My option was to update, or Quit, so I updated. (Oh - somewhere along the way, I had to re-enter my ARD serial number and (optional) ARD password.

5. I still can't get reports.

Hi Jim,

You need to uninstall the client as well. Disabling won't work.

From the "uninstalling ARD" page, emphasis mine:

Normally, you should not try to remove Apple Remote Desktop from Mac OS X 10.3 or later clients, because it is an integral part of the operating system. Simply disable the client in Sharing preferences, if desired.

However, if you installed Apple Remote Desktop 3 (admin or client) and wish to revert to Apple Remote Desktop 2, use the Terminal commands listed below in the 10.2 section, then reinstall Apple Remote Desktop 2.

Even though it says "Apple Remote Desktop 2," the same applies for 3.5 & 3.4.

Honestly, there's no way I'm doing any torrenting or searching on tpb, even though I have a legit license. I'm envious of all you people with install cds.
