MacBook Air Fan Noise With Lion

So I just installed Lion on my late 2010 13" MBA and have noticed today that the fan like to rev up then slowly come back down.... then five minutes or so later do it all again. I've looked in activity monitor and nothing seems to be causing this, I'm only on safari and not doing anything with Java or Flash. Is anyone else havin this problem or know a way to troubleshoot it?

I guess you did the right thing... Lion is kind of mandatory for me for some encryption reasons (and don't get me started on Filevault on SL).

Apple is delivering to MacBook Air users an unacceptable Windows experience. They should rename Lion to Vista!

Did any of you try to install 10.7.2 (available to apple developers). If no fix are included in 10.7.2, I'll likely give up with Lion.

Is Lion an overview of the post Steve Jobs period???

Hello

I can now compare an MBA 2010 (2,13GHz c2d) with an MBA2011 i7 (both 13", 4GB,256GBFlash).

According to my tests the 2011 modell stay much longer quiet then the 2010 model.

Speed is much higher. Temperatur of the CPU is in average 10-20 degrees Celsius lower.

Currently the 2011 MBA CPU has about 48 degrees Celsius (while im typing this).

In case there is an interest I can post geekbench, novabench and xbench results also.

I finally have Lion tamed on my first generation MacBook Air. I used CoolBook on it since new to keep the temperature under control as they always had a tendency to run hot. With the introduction of Lion CoolBook stopped working and the developer hasn't released a Lion specific version.

On one of my periodic checks to see if CoolBook had been updated I found that someone has identified a work around to get CoolBook working again. I followed the instructions and have been running my MacBook Air for two weeks now without any over heating or any indication of a problem with the system. To get the real benifit of CoolBook you will need a licensed copy. I do have a license and have undervolted the chip to get the reduction in heat and increase in battery life. Since doing this my CPU has not gone over 80C even under the heaviest of use. I was getting thermal shut down before this. Idling it is sitting at 42C. I also use FanController a let the fan run at 1000rpm untill the CPU reaches 50C then have the speed increase to the maximum at 70C. This is a less agressive start point for the fan ramp but reaches full speed quicker. I find this works very well on my system.

Anyone interested should make themselves aware of the risks and then take a look at roaringapps.com for the entry on CoolBook. http://roaringapps.com/app:255 There are a lot of historical comments in the thread from before the fix was found but just take a look at the notes section to get the instructions.

Be aware that CoolBook doesn't work for any of the i5 or i7 based laptops. This is a solution for the older MacBook Airs only.

I just bought a New Air with the i5.

With Lion the system works great, I get excellent battery life with the keybord light off and the display turned down a bit.

The computer runs quite and cool even with any programs running, except for runing video with using Chrome or streaming, then the heat runs up to 200* F and the fan runs very fast.

I think the bottom line is that the Air is not made for video. I suggest to avoid installing flash player and only use chrome when needing to watch a video.

I have a new MBA (with Lion), five weeks old and had no fan noise at all until yesterday. At some point in the morning, the fan came on full speed and wouldn't turn off. Restarting, killing all apps, etc had no effect. Same thing today. I called Apple Support and the rep quickly walked me through a procedure to reset something in system management, which instantly resolved the problem:

Good luck!

I did a clean install of Lion on a new drive in my first gen MacBook unibody and ran all the updates. I let Spotlght index and didn't install a single thing on the machine - the fan starts cycling from the second I hit the power button and continues to do so. I've reset both SMC and PRAM with no change.

The system temperatures are the same as they are under SL, this is clearly a bug in Lion that needs a fix from Apple. I put my SL drive back in my machine and it runs perfect.
