Q: Font problems in Safari 5.1 (Lion)

I am seeing the type replaced with an "A" inside a box on multiple websites.

I've rebooted my system and still seeing the same error.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I found that restarting in safe mode fixed the issue. To do this restart holding down the shift

Key, once you see the grey bar along bottom of the screen release the the shift key, once it has booted fully restart again into normally mode.

    Hi ray,

That's a standard method to clear all cache files in the user account you log into in Safe Mode, which also resets Font Book's database (among other things a Safe Mode boot does).

That may be at least part of what people are having trouble with. Old Snow Leopard cache files not being updated or replaced when Lion is installed over SL.

this sounds like an EXCELLENT reason to switch to Chrome.

Mr. Jobs, please get your top folks on it... We love our macs and Safari.... but this just will not do, sir.

    love,

I suppose, if you want a limited browser, without the intergration in the OS. And it may be faster than Safari, but that doesn't make it better.

Besides, the problem is fixable and then there's no reason to use Chrome at all.

"And it may be faster than Safari, but that doesn't make it better."

you're right. The fact that it displays text correctly so you can actually READ the articles rather than look at little A's in boxes makes it better.

"Besides, the problem is fixable and then there's no reason to use Chrome at all."

That's what windows users say... "______ is fixable, so why use a mac?"

BECAUSE IN A MAC, I DON'T HAVE TO FIX IT.

    or

BECAUSE (currently) IN CHROME, I DON'T  HAVE TO FIX IT.

And yes, in regards to browsers, Speed is one of the metrics by which one would justify "better" or "worse."

don't get me wrong. I'd prefer to use Safari. But the page that keeps crapping out is APPLE'S OWN PAGE SEE BELOW (me.com, itunes movie trailers, etc.)

Y'd think they'd have at LEAST their page displaying correctly.

    pete

oh, and craigslist... serioiusly... craigslist (see below)? I could understand whacking Microsoft's page (see below), but craigslist? It's not like CL is inherently complicated.

And of course, Chrome is bug free and has been since release?

No clue... rarely used it. never noticed any bugs when I did use it. but at least I can actually READ google's home page inside of GOOGLE'S browser.

look, eric... we're on the same side. I'm a safari advocate and supporter. I'm just P!553D that I can't use it as I have used it for the last (however many) years!

And, if the browser being integrated into the OS is a plus, then IE must be AMAZING.

Seriously, sir... you need to understand what you're talking about before you blab. This thread was started because people WANT safari to work... if you read my original post, I want my computer to work when I plug it in, and not have to do some special dance every time I reboot (which is rarely).

Why do you use a mac, eric? Is it a statement of your emo-ness? Is it to be non-conformist? is it to look cool whilst sitting in a coffee shop drinking your $8 latte?

As for me, I use it to do WORK. Real WORK. Thus, when a central component of my work (i.e Safari) stops working as it should, I'm forced to look elsewhere.

And, yes... it only happens on SOME sites... but I don't have a list of those sites included with the OS and Safari 5.1... so, I need to know that the browser will do the most BASIC items without fail (like, oh... display text... idk, just a thought).

Chrome may have MANY bugs (as do IE, Firefox, Safari, Opera & Mozilla) But I can READ the text on most major sites... and i'd probably guess that Apple thinks their OWN site would be one of those "major" sites which should load properly. I doubt Steve Jobs and the Safari team have never heard of Craigslist... but it sure as H3LL seems like they don't mind Ms. Softy's site displaying correctly.

So, in conclusion eric... I still assert:

the text display issue needs to be corrected SOONER rather than later. Safari doesn't need to be losing market share.

    capiche?

    love,

    pete

What you don't seem to undestand it that it's a bug involving a few fonts. It's not Safari only. It's not Apple's website. The cure is not necessarily to switch browsers. The solution is there. I fixed mine and it works perfectly. Is that the ideal situation? NO. But then if you don't want to run into such glitches, don't upgrade yet.

Lots of people wait. Those of us who don't deal with it. I did, and it works perfectly. One of the problems here is Apple's secrecy. They don't let enough people test things before they release it. If there had been wider distribution, this bug might not have happened. But they're not going to change. So I just deal with it. Use Firefox or Chrome if I used it. So far, I don't. Google has enough real estate on my devices already.

I suspect the font/Safari issue will be fixed this week when they release 10.7.1. (They have distributed 10.7.2 to developers already, so it's imminent.)

    Hello!

If anyone is using FontAgent Pro, I made a video tutorial showing how to "fix" the Safari font issue.

    Video Tutorial Link:

NOTE: While this fix works, I'm sure it's not recommended by Apple. Proceed with caution.

That's cool if you're using your font management software. If not, then it's not very easy to figure out the proper paths. I'm thinking I might have to just bite the bullet and move the files back into my user font folder.

I think I found the font that is causing the A block issue...Arial. If I turn Arial on and off the font in Safari corrects itself dynamically, don't even have to refresh the page.

I wish the problem was Arial. And mayb it is for some people. But it appears most people's problem is their font managers and the bug in Webkit. It'll take a fix in webkit to rid us of this issue.
