Where is the side calendar? How can I get it back? I need the side calendar to go to different dates while keeping the main calendar in a week view.

The sidebar is no longer present in the Lion iCal window. There is no user option to make it reappear.
I suggest that you use Apple - iCal - Feedback to let Apple know about your requirements.
I sent some feedback to Apple. That sidebar is very important!
