Disable autosave

I was perfectly serious and continue to be.

I worked during more than 30 years as a craftsman so I am accustomed to never trust upon others for my works.

I made quite all my tools by myself because I was not satisfied by what was available in stores.

I behaved the same with my computers. I don't have any kind of empathy for beings able to make them prisoner of a tool so that any flaw in it may become a huge handicap. I always took care to keep at least an alternate way to achieve single goals. In the same kind of safety choices, I refused to work with huge customers (mainly from the USA) because I refused every customer able to buy more than 20% of my activity.

I started behaving this way at the age of 16. I'm now 67 years old and I think that I made good choices.

Those people are nearly as annoying as Lion. Ignore them.

Stay the course, force Apple to fix their blunders, contribute to the cause. Help make it great. Do not stop dreaming and force-drag Apple with you.

I think we all know deep down that Lion would not have been delivered to users in it's current form had Steve not gotten so sick.

Maybe Yvan doesn't have a life, but I do. Then I'm tired of reading his "fanatic" statments about Apple, so I decided to stop receiving email notifications for this thread.

As a final comment, since Lion is getting so alike to iOS, I hope and I will wait for the "Lion Jailbreak", where users can do with their OS whatever they want to do in the way they want to do it.

I totally agree with you. I use keynote to produce graphics and design presentations. They are often more than 30 pages long, using a mix of placed PDF, PNG and JPGs and limited amounts of text.

Every time I need to add a page, move elements around or edit the copy, the document autosaves about every 10 seconds. I type about 3 words, when the last one gets interrupted by a 40 seconds spinning beach-ball and a warning sounds for every character I dared to type after it just started saving ( so about 6 purr sounds). cool. So I wait for the spinning to stop restart typing on last word and get about 3 - 4 words in before it starts spinning and saving again.

I do not care how the file works and how the autosave feature works, but how is this productive?

and I am not even talking about editing the graphics. Move any elements - save.... scale it slightly - get interrupted with save. It takes ages to get things done now.

I really need to try and reinstall an older version on here. or hope for this feature to be optional.

On a very different note, is there a way to download this entire thread (preferably as a text file) without having to click each of the 29 pages and save it as an html page?

It may seem an odd request, but I'm doing some research on online technical support communities, and this thread is ideal for what I need (no, I'm not looking at individuals' contributions, I just need to analyse the content broken down into different categories regarding the topic).

softwater, there are add-ons for browsers that can expand multiple page-threads downwards in one row. Maybe that would help you a bit.

Back on topic, users usually want to spend their time on getting their things done and not on getting the system to work propperly. So in my oppinion the changes that came with autosave and versions are a step backwards in terms of usability and efficiency. If that's ironed out, I'd be happy again, with or without autosave (I don't care).

Hah! Yes, I'm getting a little caught up on Yvan's comments. But I just don't get what he's trying to prove. Heck, I don't think he does, either. Too bad, because he can be very helpful, but I really don't understand why he's even posting in this thread, or similar ones. The idea of these forums is to help users, and his comments are the direct opposite of that.

Going back to Windows isn't even a thought. I'd have to repurchase thousands of dollars in software. I wouldn't be able to work with my client's originals (they're all on Macs, also). Fonts alone are a problem in that respect. Don't believe for a moment that OpenType fonts are perfect across platforms, so that a Quark/InDesign document created on the Mac or Windows will be perfectly identical on the opposite system. The problem isn't actually the fonts, but the type engines between the two OS's. They do not render identically.

If necessary, I will stay in Snow Leopard as absolutely long as possible. Eventually, needing, not just wanting newer versions of software will force me forward as they don't usually work more than one or two OS versions back. I also have to keep in stride with my clients so we're using the same platform and versions of software.

We can only hope Apple comes to their senses and realizes what the customer wants is what matters; not their own "blinders on" vision.

Well, I got the AutoPaginzer add-on for Safari (https://extensions.apple.com/), it works for every forum but for this one here 😟 . Firefox also has such add-ons so maybe that one works. I'm not very familiar with Firefox but you should find them in settings > add-ons or so...

You may argue if clicking 29 pages is that much work ... but wget will be your friend.

1. install wget with fink or macports

use terminal to enter a command like:

wget --wait=40 --limit-rate=100K -r -p -U Mozilla <url of site your want to download>

This will download an entire site, prob. more than you need but the forum pages should be in there.

I discovered a case where Autosave is a real problem.

When an AppleScript is embarked in a long task upon a document,the Autosave process issue dialog claiming "the document was changed by an other application, must I drop the changes or save them ?" of course, the answer is "Save them" but the user must be present to press the button which is a serious drawback.

When an AppleScript is performing a long task on a document, the Autosave process throws up a dialogue box claiming that "the document was changed by an other application. Do you want to ignore the changes or save them ?"

The answer is of course "Save them" but the user must be present to press the button. This is a serious drawback.

May you understand once that English is not my language ?
