Q: Disable autosave

Hello, anybody figured out how one can disable autosave? I just *don't* want it, and I have my reasons.

Thanks,

I also just realized that Google Docs does exactly the same thing.

I doubt Apple will decide to "take it back". I think this is the "new era" and I think we will just have to find ways to cope with this...

Yep. It's pretty simple. Some just refuse to relearn from old comfortsble ways. I don't find it intrusive whatsoever, in fact it's saved my bacon a couple of times already.

    Cheers

Sometimes "old comfortable ways" = "productive ways". That is my main concern right now as I spend twice as much time getting work done... I'm sure this is not a problem for "normal" users.

I can't share the experience of finding something good for my work. What's happening is that I have a lot of duplicated files for just looking into them without wanting to change them. Alternatively navigate through that horrible dropdown menu on the top of the window or permanently hit undo undo undo undo.

I still haven't discovered anything helpful in the "new" concept. In my oppinion it is a degeneration to a note-taking-ios-app standard.

A lot of my concerns would be gone if there was an option to turn on a saving confirmation on closing the document.

Not for productive workers who adapt to the times. I need to learn any interface changes with each update of Adobe CS for instance, within a couple of days of change over. That is the way that it goes. Otherwise I would still be running the original CS on Panther. Part of the job. Don't like it? Go back to Snow Leopard. Different strokes and all that. No one forced you to upgrade and Versions was one of the many changes touted in all the info about Lion before and upon it's release, yet you still chose to update?

Neil what kind of answer is this?

There are zillions of ways to implement a new feature and the way Autosave and Versions are implemented is simply terrible. What's wrong with asking to change it? What  do you think a user list is for? Just so that when people find problems and ask for changes or solutions there are other people who answer "Don't like it? change OS"?

Zillions? What sort of estimate is that? And a terrible implementation in some peoples humble (or not so) opinion. Others here like the change. And as for the last part of your reply, well sorry but I can make no sense out of that whatsoever. If you don't like Versions, tell Apple.

Speaking of old geezers with bad habits who refuse to get with the plan and move with the times, when are you going to kick your old apostrophe abuse habit?

Thanks for your answer. Please read my messages in the thread (and some of several other users) to figure out what is wrong in the current implementation of Autosave. When I say wrong I mean objectively wrong, in the sense of the cognitive ergonomy of the interaction with the user -- that is, of what made Apple important and useful to begin with.  Let me remind you that Apple's VP was once Dan Norman

Most of us have already given the appropriate feedback, and with a moment's reflection maybe you'll convince yourself to do it as well

Sorry but it would be positive feedback from me. And what about all the new Apple users who will have known nothing other than Lion as their first Apple experience and still seem to be buying into the market? They will have never of known any other way other than Versions. Great implementation.

If they would get a "save as" and a "don't save" option, they would say: "Wow, great new features!"

Or just moan, because they were used to 'the old ways'. But whatever your crystal ball says papa.

    Neil from Oz:

This is not about "old ways",  This thread is about giving users the choice of disabling AutoSave if they wish.

You should take the time to read the entire thread.  Better yet, create a large Keynote presentation and see what happens when small changes are made.

Did anyone see the interview with steve wozniak? Very interesting! I can give you the gist... they had problems competing with IBM in the old days, x server was a flop, so its more "interesting" dedicating themselves to the consumer market.

I know he does not speak for Apple inc but it gives you an insight as to why things are being done this way and why some programs are less “professional friendly”.

There is really a very simple solution to the issue, just don't

use apps that have the Autosave (Apple's implementation)

    feature. Done deal.  Move on.
