Spaces shortcut key still works in Lion

While I was still running Snow Leopard, I had set F5 to activate Spaces. Even though F5 doesn't appear to be listed in the Keyboard Shortcuts preferences, it still seems to work. Now that I've upgraded to Lion, strangely the key still seems to work, but I can't get to the Spaces pref pane since it's been replaced by Mission Control. Not a major problem, but ideally I'd like to assing Launchpad to F5, doing so doesn't work while the old Spaces shortcut key holds sway.

I got it to stop working once I set them all of the categories to defaults, but after a reboot it still seems to be set to F5.

I had the same problem. I reset the PRAM and nothing, this is what I found worked so far. The user library is hidden. To bring it up open terminal then 'cd library' then 'open .'

This will bring up a finder window for the hidden folder,

go to preferences and delete the com.apple.symbolichotkeys.plist file

log out and back in, you may have to manually set other shortcuts you have made before, but you can set the launchpad shortcut to f5 now.

There is a library in the root directory, which contains system-wide information. Each user account has its own library in which it stores user preferences. That means F5 can mean different things in different user accounts.

*Log into the account in question.

*Click on the desktop so the Finder menu is visible

*Press Shift-Command-G, or select "Go to Folder" from the Go menu (it's near the bottom)

*Enter ~/Library in the box and press Return

*Find and delete com.apple.symbolichotkeys.plist

*Log out, then log back into the same account

*In System Preferences, go to the Keyboard tab

*Click on "LaunchPad & Dock" on the left

*Assign the function key to Launchpad

*Click on "Mission Control" on the left

*Put a check in the second box that is labeled "Mission Control"

This last step restores control+arrow to move from Deskop to Desktop

If you are searching for it with Command-F, it might not show up because Lion's search feature does not find system files by default. Try this:

*Press Command-F in the Finder to bring up a Search window.

*Click on Kind pop-up menu near the top of the window

*From the drop-down list, select Other

*Enter System in the Search field

*Check the In Menu check box next to the System Files entry that appears in this window

Now search for com.apple.symbolickeys.plist

Wenn das nicht klappt, bitte einen Kumpel um Hilfe. Vielleicht hast du etwas übersehen.

com.apple.symbolichotkeys.plist also contains these settings:

Control+right and control+left moves from desktop to desktop

Control+1, Control+2, and so forth, go to the specified desktop

Option+Command+D shows and hides the dock

Control-Up shows Mission Control

F12 (or Fn F12) shows the dashboard

If any of those work, it's mystery. Maybe the file is invisible. Not likely. It can't be a bug in Lion, or lots and lots of people would have this problem. It can't be a corrupt installation file, because the problem is too specific. It could be that reinstallation or recovery would fix it. You have an Apple Store in München, so you could ask a Genius there. I think that is the best bet.

This is a system file. If it doesn't exist at log in, Lion creates it. It should not be missing. It occurs to me just now that the Preferences folder might have the wrong permissions and that could prevent Lion from creating the file. Your user account should own the Permissions folder and have read and write privileges. The everyone group should have no access. There should not be any other entries in the name column beyond those two.

Don't apply to enclosed items just yet. The plist files have the same permissions, but the lockfiles have an additional entry granting Wheel read-only access.

The preference folder that conatins the plist(s) is in the users home library folder. This folder is hidden in the users home folder. The HD library folder can be seen but not the users library. To access the user library folder: In finder click GO in the menu bar, then press and hold the option key, a library folder will pop up on the list when the option key is pressed. In this library folder is the prefrence folder for individual user plist files. The user library folder is hidden and wont come up on a search, unless you are actively in that folder. Hope this helps
