Dec 21, 2011 9:50 AM in response to blimylimeyby Ricardo Ferro,Dear blimylimey, I have to disagree with you. That will automatically install all updates, not the combo. It's is more secure to download and install the combo. After that, one may select the Apple icon and install the desired updates.
But this is just my opinion.
all my best.

Jan 6, 2012 11:30 AM in response to Ricardo Ferroby Ocean Digital,Does anyone know how widespread the problem is with Lion? It seems most people I have talked to are not happy with Lion or are reluctant to install it.
I would like to know the statistics of people who refuse to run Lion or downgrade it. 10.7 seems like the Windows Vista upgrade...no one wants it.

You are trolling every old thread trying to put down Lion because you seem to have some unstated problem with it. Only a minority of people are having issues and most of them are fixing them, due to incompatable third party plug ins, poor installs or old hardware.
The Millions who don't have problems don't need to come here. This is a troubleshooting forum for user to user. What did you expect?
And as far as wanting statistics, well you do all that, but remember polls etc. are against the Terms Of Use here that you agreed to when you joined the forum. Go back to Snow Leopard from your TM backup and stop trying to use an advanced system that for some reason (you never state your actual pissues) is beyond your intellectual grasp.
Goodnight

Jan 6, 2012 2:11 PM in response to mulligans missusby Derek Hasted1,Hang on a moment - you are being *very* forthright....
You say "Only a minority of people are having issues and most of them are fixing them, due to incompatable third party plug ins, poor installs or old hardware."
No, a majority of that "minority" of people are having issues with Rosetta being removed.
That is the biggest issue.
4/5 of my files are incompatible with Lion, which is why I downgraded.
Given time, I will convert half of those and jettison the other half.
Incompatible third party plugins. NO!
Poor installs. How dare you.
Old hardware. Rubbish - 5 months old.
Dear Mrs Mulligans, you are not empathising very well with those who find that *expensive* working software no longer works with Lion and an outlay (far in excess of a new iMac) is needed to get them working again.
So please, please, don't be so quick and so ill-informed, when you judge those who downgrade, and please don't be so quick to condemn those who don't *understand* why we've downgraded.
It is, whether you wish to admit it or not, a sad fact that using Pages I can open Microsoft Word documents created in 2001, but not AppleWorks documents of the same age. That, actually, is rather the issue - Apple's lack of support to old Apple products, not Apple's lack of support to PC users.
This, Mrs Mulligans, is why many of us are staying with Snow Leopard while we ponder what to do.
And what to do, when one's livelihood depends on being able to open documents created in the past, is really not that simple as saying "grow up"

Well why didn't you note that before installing lion? That is not the biggest issue people are having. It is not even as issue. It is a component that was dropped for this OS and PPC integration was announced as being dropped over 5 years ago. The biggest issues here with Lion are WiFi and Battery Issues and Sleep Issues. if 4/5th of your Apps are incompatable then you are way, way out of date. The world will not stand by and wait for you to catch up. 4/5ths? What on earth are you running??

A 5 month old computer and 4/5ths of your software doesn't work? What rubbish did you put on a brand new computer? Lion is 6 months old!
Poor Installs refers to Downloaded installs that may have been corrupted od broken before installing
Incompatable Apps? Yes 4/5ths of them apparently in your case.

There are only two things to do.
Good Luck Indeed

Jan 6, 2012 3:09 PM in response to mulligans missusby Derek Hasted1,Oh dear, you really aren't reading what I wrote, are you, Mrs Mulligans?
I bought a new iMac, it came with Lion installed. I downgraded it.
I did not "put Lion on it". You said that.
And as for you saying it is not an issue, well, that's just patronising. I bought a new machine and it did not run my software until I downgraded it. It's not an issue - I'm old enough and ugly enough to know what "an issue" is.
What "rubbish" did I put on it? My last 10 years' livelihood. That's all....
What am I running? None of your business. I'm needing to access files from a long time ago. That's all.
It's my business, and I don't have the time nor the inclination to convert 10 years' of livelihood into new formats when all I simply want is to access the last 7 years of them, as is required under UK taxation laws. I need to access files created 7 years ago. Lion stops me doing that. Not a problem to me, I'm just stating that it's a problem if one runs Lion.
You needn't wish me good luck - I bought a new machine, knowing it was running Lion, and knowing I could downgrade it.
Now stop telling me my software is rubbish and kindly accept that your view is not the only one. Then we can get along just fine.
You would perhaps understand the situation a little better if when you next buy a new car you find that the windscreen scraper, the maps, the spanners and the satnav that worked with your old car don't work with the new. I'm sure you wouldn't call your current car possessions "rubbish" quite as keenly as you chose to do with my three thousand pounds worth of software.
Have you noticed that now BluRay is out, you can still play DVDs? Have you noticed that now HD TV is out, you can still receive SD TV? Have you noticed that now new cars are out, you can still get old ones mended?
As I said, I can read older PC documents in Lion than I can old Apple Documents.
Anyway, I have a clear understanding of the issues, and the manifold solutions I can pick from. And please don't tell me I *installed* Lion without being aware of the problems. You *assumed* that.
Thank you for wishing me Good Luck. That was rather nice of you. But I don't need luck when I have a strategy.
I shan't continue this. For some reason Snow Leopard only lets me reply once. Funny that. I bet that doesn't happen in Lion :-)

Jan 6, 2012 3:31 PM in response to mulligans missusby Derek Hasted1,Claris? What made you say that? I have no Claris software on my machine. That's your second assumption that's wrong. You're not looking good here :-)
You clearly have some point to make, but it's not a coherent one.
Goodnight Mrs M. Thanks for a lively, though ultimately futile, debate.
PS - Nice edit to your post Mrs Mulligans, after I replied, to add AppleWorks so my reply looks less good. Nice try. But your game is rumbled :-)

A little more widespread in appearance when you open up dead threads instead of opening your own. This thread was questioned before 10.7.1 and 10.7.2. So if that's what you are going on then you are two updates behind in imformation, so start your own thread and let this one die a respectful death.

What's your problem? YOU ARE THE TROLL who has contributed nothing to the topic of this conversation. This thread is far from dead so please get off your high horse. People want to downgrade from Lion, deal with it and your other personal problems too.

You have some serious issues that won't be solved by participating in these Apple forums. Seek some help (not at the Genius Bar). Your constant TROLLING is derailing a conversation you dont even want to be part of, just move on and let the rest of us continue to discuss "Downgrading from Lion to 10.6.8?" as the title suggests.

Jan 9, 2012 11:52 AM in response to tvhandyby bowerandy,Well just to calm things down a bit I'll explain why I'm about to do a trial run at downgrading to SL. I say trial run because I'm going to re-install SL to an external bootable drive first and if it works okay then copy that over to my internal drive.
So here are the reasons I feel I need to downgrade:
1) SMB file sharing with Windows computers is severely broken.
Since 2006 I have moved completely over to Mac hardware. We have spent a small fortune on Apple hardware and now have 6 iMacs, a MacBook Pro, a MacBook Air and 2 Mac Minis. Since much of my software still runs on Windows (I'm actually a Windows developer) I need to be able to run Windows on some of these Macs and share files between them. I currently run one Mac with bootcamp and 3 others with Parallels.
OS X can see the Windows disks just fine. However, there are no end of permissions problems with the Windows machines seeing the Mac partitions. This is unfortunate since I've gradually moved most of my data over to OS X specifcally so it can be backed up with TM. I've tried the solutions on these forums for this SMB problem but sometimes it works and then later it stops working. Windows file sharing is now just terribly unreliable whereas it was fine before.
2) Preview hangs when it starts if you recently opened a file that was on a now disconnected hard disk. It turns out I do this quite often. The only way to get started again is to reconnect the disk, Force Quit and restart Preview and then clear the recent file menu. Doing this is a pain in the neck. Clearing the Recent menu before closing Preview doesn't seem to work
3) The memory requirements for Lion seem significantly higher than for SL and push my main machine into swapping more than it ever used to.
4) Versioning seems to slow opening documents down. I'm not sure why this should be since they presumably keep the final revision and then reverse-diffs but Preview and iWork documents definitely seem slower to open.
5) I don't much like the versioning model. Don't get me wrong, the idea of versioning is a good one but not being able to do a Save As, instead having to Duplicate does not seem ideal. Call me old fashioned but I like to be able to make changes to something and then just throw them away if I don't need them, rather than creating a duplicate, making changes and then having to trash the new file. Also Locking a file after a certain period to prevent accidental changes seems a bit friggy and arbitrarty to me.
6) I'm gradually discovering more applications that don't work with Lion. Today I discovered that no Daz3D product installers work because of a permissions problem. Also, Bryce3D (another Daz3D) product also doesn't work with Lion. Okay, you could say that I should have checked compatibility first but I must have over 50 apps installed and I was just too lazy (I guess) to check them all.
In short there are just loads of niggles and one show stopper (the file sharing). The only thing I'll miss is the syncing of Contacts and Calendars via iCloud (the document sharing can be achieved with Dropbox anyway. I'm hoping that iCloud will get back-ported to SL. The Launch Pad and Mission Control are just another way of doing stuff that the Dock and Spaces do so I'm not that bothered to lose those.
Best regards

Jan 9, 2012 12:14 PM in response to bowerandyby Ocean Digital,Use a Google account to sync your contacts and calendar in SL, it works perfectly.
Thanks for putting this conversation back on track.

Jan 15, 2012 6:30 PM in response to tvhandyby wdmeissner,Well here's my issue. I just received a refurbished MBP but it came with Lion pre-installed. After talking to Applecare it looks like the firmware or logic board may have been upgraded for lion so now it can't go back to snow leopard. When I try to boot from a snow leopard retail DVD the computer just beeps with an altert tone. It won't boot from the DVD. So how does one get a computer from apple with snow leopard? According to Applecare, you can't. He suggested I try to find a used machine. ????
