ipad won't sync with mac

I downleaded itunes 10.2.1 and my mac no longer recognizes my ipad when I try to sync it. I tried everything suggested including reinstalling itunes etc. I then downloaded itunes 10.4 and have the same problem mac no longer recognizes the ipad and will not sync.
