Open Firmware Password option in Lion?

Boot holding Command+R, once you have chosen your language selection you can use the Utilities menu to access the Firmware Password options.

FileVault 2 is full disk encryption, which is a better option if you want your data secured.

FileVault can be cracked using network boot and specific software...using the OpenFirmware password allows you to protect your computer from such an attack...

I'm currently setting this up before a trip to a foreign country in case my computer gets stolen...at least it will be useless...

Hi am confused beause when i reboot with command+R i get to the utilities where i see my hard drive, super drive and bootable image. i cannot find where the open firmware password option is on the options when i have the hard drive selected. anyone ca nshow me vie screen shot or description?

I hate to burst your bubble, but Open Firmware password is easier to circumvent. Good luck in your little world.

If you look in the top right corner of your screen while booted to Recovery Partition you will see a black Apple logo on the menu bar.

Follow that menu bar to the right until you see "Utilities"

From that Utilities menu you will see the Firmware Password Utility.

Thanks ebilnelli! i was going in too far! i made my password and together with prey and a guest account for the future-thief am hoping will be enough to relocate should it ever get stolen!

It might be easy to circumvent, but I didn't say you had to use only this password...

It is an additional protection...

And if your Mac gets stolen by someone who is less an expert, he won't be able to (easily) reinstall anything on your Mac...
