Finder Crash on Lion

I have my Lion Finder crashing all the time.

I can't even restart, quit an app and it will get unresponsibe. A soon as you Force Quit, the Finder crash.

I can get to restart the machine, need to push the power button until it turns off.

Also everytime this happen, Spotlight begins the index again, from scratch.

Any ideas.

I have clean install Lion (Make an USB installer) and then move my files using time Machine.

I am afraid that the only solution is to begin from scratch... I hope not.

thanks!

Hi I had exactly the same problems after upgrading to Lion. The best explanation and solution I have found can be viewed at

Although not foolproof as you have to keep repeating the process it is the first help I've had.

Please apple fix this problem, it is damaging your reputation.

I do! I downloaded Dropbox and the Finder has crashed by blinking with the "restore windows"-window. The I created another administrator account and from here deleted Dropbox. Then restarted and logged in to my normal account. Now Finder wasn't blinking like before but there is nothing viewable on the Desktop and when I click on Finder in the Dock several times it comes up with a window for a splitsecond then closes the window again. Then I can press it several times again and it comes up for a splitsecond and the closes again. When hitting the command-aoption-esc, the icon blinks here. I've actually also tried the killall Finder in terminal, but even this doesn't work. WHATTODO???

Im having the same issue with Finder crashing, however this only seems to happen after i install paragon NTFS version 9.5.3 however other user accounts work with no issues. Is there a way to find out what program could be causing this issue? I get no desktop icons and finder fails to do anything after 3 seconds of login.

FIXED! After restoring my 2010 MacBook Pro TWICE running Lion, I figured out the cause.

As mentioned previously in this post, the culprit is TIME MACHINE!

My office uses a Shared Server that has an external drive connected that people can point their Time Machine Backups too. After restoring, everything seemed fine, turned Time Machine on and shortly thereafter, FINDER CRAHSES!!!

So after reproducing this problem TWICE, turning off Time Machine seems to do the trick. Im three days running with no errors versus three force restarts per day.

Just to add another note here...

I updated to Lion awhile back, however, this issue just started for me. After studying the crashlog via the Console.app, I was able to determine the recently added Google Drive app was causing my Finder (not the machine) to crash and restart about every two minutes. It's been fine since I quite using the Google Drive app. Perhaps Google will update the app soon.

My PAINLESS fix:

1. Finder-> preferences->general tab->change to "always open folders in a new window"

2. Finder-> preferences->advanced->remove check for "show all filename extensions"

3. View-> as Icons

4. View->View options-> check "open in icon view" and "browse in icon view"

Making the above changes, I no longer had the finder crashing when opening folders etc. in Mac Lion OSX 10.7.4.

I noticed that in the desktop, when opening the icons and folders directly from the desktop, i was not crashing. I also noted the problem mentioned by other users with the leopard file extensions. However, instead of having to change file names, i mimicked the folder view i had in the desktop to the finder, thus avoiding the potential conflicts resulting in the check made viewing the problematic old extensions and a reiteration made when viewing in the same window. You may try to skip one or two of the above steps, but the above worked.

If you have any questions, please let me know or if i happened to skip a step. This was the least painful way to correct the problem and yet be able to view and access my files from the finder without any crashes.
