No Signal on HDMI TV After Lion Upgrade

I just installed Lion on my Mac mini and my TV no longer receives a signal over HDMI. I've tried a bunch of different cobinations of restarting the TV and computer without any luck. Without a display, I can't use Screen Sharing to try chaning any of the prefrences. Does anyone have a solution to this problem? Thanks.

For everyone who is having HDTV display and digital audio output problems take the advice of a few of the other posters here and go out and purchase Gefen HDMI Detective Plus. It retails for $129 but Amazon has it for sale for around $80. It will fix your Mac HDMI out video and audio problems period. Yeah it ***** you have to buy it but if you have the HDMI problems it was designed to fix you already have spent several thousand dollars on computer and home theater equipment so what is another $80 to keep everything working right.

By way of background, I have a late 2010 Quadcore I7 Imac, which also doubles as a HTPC for a 7.1 speaker set up in my loft with my Denon 4308CI amp and Panasonic HDTV (via a long 100 ft HDMI run). I use the Imac bluetooth keyboard and trackpad in the living room to control the Imac when viewing on my HDTV. The set up worked great with Snow Leopard until the 10.6.8 update killed my digital audio. I reverted to 10.6.7 to fix the issue until Lion 10.7.1 was released and I read on another Apple thread that the HDMI out issues had been solved. When I upgraded I lost both HDMI video and audio and I was hoping that 10.7.2 would solve the issues but it did not.

Anyhow, I was getting ready to go back to 10.6.7 again but read this whole thread for solutions and stumbled on the Gefen hardware solution. After doing some research it seems that many HTPCs have HDMI out problems with software updates and AV receivers and not just Apple. I bought the product, spoke to Gefen tech support before the set up as their instrucitons are a little unclear but after that I set up the product in no time and now everything is working perfectly once again. Best of all, I don't have to worry now about future software updates killing my HDMI out video and audio again.

BTW, if you use a AV receiver with your Imac just use one of the preset Gefen generic codes at set up as storing your HDTV's EDID in the Gefen may not allow you to push multi channel digital audio as well as video from your Imac.

For got to mention that my system was set up as

HDMI->Yamaha receiver->Samsung TV.

Still had issue if I connect direct to TV.

From the list I see so far Samsung, Sony, Vizio, Mitsubishi,

and Philips TVs. Doesn't seem to be to be limited to a particular

display.

Also, if you can't get a display to work, how do you apply

an update?

This is such a basic functionality of the 2011 Mac Mini.

How could Apple have not tested this? And since the issue

spans so many different displays, the problem is generic.

This is just really sloppy product development to have such

a basic functionality borked.

Every update since 10.6.4 has borked either audio or

video on my Mini in some way shape or form. Its the

only Mac that I have that has had any issues. Maybe they

just don't care about the Mini.

Since I got the Mini, no updates had any adverse effects

on my iMac, now retired Macbook, or my new 2011 MBP 13" i7.

HDMI is a basic functionality of the Mini and obviously wasn't

tested properly with Lion or these issues would not occur.

And what I see sofar, Samsung, Sony, Vizio, Philips, and Mitsubishi

TVs affected. Doesn't seem limited to a particular display to me.

I just installed Lion on my 2010 Mini and I've got the same issue as you guys. No picture at all. My TV is a Pioneer Elite 50" plasma and the AV Receiver is a Denon. All input to the TV comes from the receiver. So whatever Apple did to Lion, the Denon receiver does not like it. The model number is Denon AVR-3310CI.

If this won't work, I hope I can get back to Snow Leopard.

I think the bug in Lion goes well beyond HDMI. I have a program called RemoteTap on my iPad and it isn't working either. The background looks like a checkerboard.

I really need to get Lion off of this Mini because unplugging everything and shutting it down does not always work. I'm running a VoIP PBX on this Mini and am unable to get into the system. I trusted Apple because since I joined them in 2005 I've never had an issue with an upgrade before. I learned a lesson - wait at least 2 months before upgrading from now on.

Does anyone know how I can get back to Snow Leopard?

I have the same issue with my Mac Mini purchased from Apple on June 11, 2011 with Lion upgrade connected via HDMI to Phillips 55 LCD TV

What it does now:

1. Hear chime

2. See white screen gray apple logo

3. All white screen

4. Flicks to a blue screen

5. Black and TV displays NO VIDEO SIGNAL message

6. Black screen and TV displays Unsupported video format message

P-RAM reset has done nothing.

Well I just went to get it and I was greeted with the "We will be back soon" sticky note on the Dev portal. So they are up to something, it's located in the iCloud beta portal so I'm not getting my hopes up yet. As soon as the Dev Center goes back up I will have a look, and tell you what I can without breaching my "sworn to secrecy" contract.

I'm yet another user fscked by this issue. I picked up a 2010 Mini last sunday for a new HTPC. Found out Thursday that the 2011 Minis had been released. Went back to the Apple Store yesterday and swapped out for the new one. Got it home and found that it wouldn't display on my TV. Grrrrr! Was going to a block party last night, so I wasn't too worried about getting it working.

Checked here this morning to see if other folks were having the issue and found this thread. I did my part and called AppleCare, got escalated to a Senior Advisor and reported this issue.

Has anyone tried installing SL on the 2011 mini or will that just result in a 'This hardware isn't supported' message?

I'm trying an upgrade yet again. Previously I was upgrading

from 10.6.7. This time I'm trying it after updating to 10.6.8.

My Macbook Pro and iMac were upgraded from 10.6.8 and

have had no problems. We'll see. Also, if HDMI doesn't work,

I am going to try my Display Port to DVI adapter then to HDMI

and see what happens. (Have the DP to DVI for my Macbook Pro

so not costing me anything to try).

I was reading through these comment thread last night.

I have a 2010 HDMI Mac Mini which I used with a 2010 Samsung 40" LCD TV as the display connected through HDMI, almost always at 720p resolution. After upgrading to Lion on the first day it was released, I found that if the Mini went to sleep and I tried to wake it up, I would get a no-signal message on the TV. This would happen rarely with Snow Leopard, and could usually be fixed by powering off the TV and powering it on again. This didn't work with Lion; I wound up having to force-shut the Mini down.

I experimented last night, and discovered that if I switched to 1080p through the Displays menu in the menu bar, my TV would immediately go black and give me a "no signal" message. This is while the Mini was deliberately in use. Turning off the TV and back on again, made no difference, and neither did unplugging the HDMI cable and plugging it back in after a few seconds.

This is a major problem as far as using the Mini as I had taken for granted with Snow Leopard. I'm relieved to see so many other people complaining about the same issue. Hopefully there will be a solution soon.

I would guess that it likely will be fixed. I'm surprised that Apple released Lion with such an issue. As soon as I installed Lion I had the problem right away. So obviously Lion wasn't testing well with products that the general public are using. It's also annoying that Philips takes the stance that they aren't going to guarantee compatibility with Macs or other products. That reminds me - "Do not purchase any Philips products". Companies that play the blame game are not getting a dime from me.

This stupid HDCP copy protection nonsense has cause the public more headaches than anything I've ever seen before. 3 years ago I had a satellite receiver that stopped working on my TV because of HDCP and I ended up having to use component cables instead of HDMI. The satellite company stated that certain televisions did not like their flavor of HDCP, yet my TV was only 6 months old. It's utterly ridiculous. I'll bet this current foolishness with Lion not working with several displays is all HDCP related. It sure looks that way as these symptoms are identical to what I had with my satellite receiver 3 years ago. I'm not sure what these companies are trying to protect with their stupid HDCP. Geeks out there will always find a way around whatever logic they use to lock things down. The thing they are forgetting is the consumer. What about legitimate people like me who wants to just use my TV as a monitor to my Mac Mini and now I can't use it without unhooking it from my Denon receiver and plugging it directly into the TV? That's not how it worked when I bought it in 2010, and I have not changed my receiver and I have not changed my TV.

I guess the MacBook Pro is now suffering too. I don't know for certain, but I'll bet the pesky HDCP has something to do with it. I hope that Apple pushes hard on this one. My satellite company didn't and we all ended up using component. That is just very wrong.

That's great that they are addressing this issue. I've been thinking of switching back to Snow Leopard and actually found my installation disks in the basement. The work and time associated with this is terrible. I'd have to reinstall everything afterwards. I learned a good lesson - no more installing new operating systems until they've been around for a long while and are working.
