No Signal on HDMI TV After Lion Upgrade

I just installed Lion on my Mac mini and my TV no longer receives a signal over HDMI. I've tried a bunch of different cobinations of restarting the TV and computer without any luck. Without a display, I can't use Screen Sharing to try chaning any of the prefrences. Does anyone have a solution to this problem? Thanks.

For everyone who is having HDTV display and digital audio output problems take the advice of a few of the other posters here and go out and purchase Gefen HDMI Detective Plus. It retails for $129 but Amazon has it for sale for around $80. It will fix your Mac HDMI out video and audio problems period. Yeah it ***** you have to buy it but if you have the HDMI problems it was designed to fix you already have spent several thousand dollars on computer and home theater equipment so what is another $80 to keep everything working right.

By way of background, I have a late 2010 Quadcore I7 Imac, which also doubles as a HTPC for a 7.1 speaker set up in my loft with my Denon 4308CI amp and Panasonic HDTV (via a long 100 ft HDMI run). I use the Imac bluetooth keyboard and trackpad in the living room to control the Imac when viewing on my HDTV. The set up worked great with Snow Leopard until the 10.6.8 update killed my digital audio. I reverted to 10.6.7 to fix the issue until Lion 10.7.1 was released and I read on another Apple thread that the HDMI out issues had been solved. When I upgraded I lost both HDMI video and audio and I was hoping that 10.7.2 would solve the issues but it did not.

Anyhow, I was getting ready to go back to 10.6.7 again but read this whole thread for solutions and stumbled on the Gefen hardware solution. After doing some research it seems that many HTPCs have HDMI out problems with software updates and AV receivers and not just Apple. I bought the product, spoke to Gefen tech support before the set up as their instrucitons are a little unclear but after that I set up the product in no time and now everything is working perfectly once again. Best of all, I don't have to worry now about future software updates killing my HDMI out video and audio again.

BTW, if you use a AV receiver with your Imac just use one of the preset Gefen generic codes at set up as storing your HDTV's EDID in the Gefen may not allow you to push multi channel digital audio as well as video from your Imac.

Hey Jocke

The "bogus hdmi high speed cable tip" I posted earlier was given to me by someone @ Yamaha.. I have had this problem for about half a year, and have now chosen to swap the Yamaha for the VSX-921.

I have had many conversations with Yamaha, they don't lead nowhere, especially since the V1067 got a fw update that fixed the issue (at least for a close friend of mine), but they say that they won't do anything about it with the V667 - "it's a known issue" they said...

Gotta love it.. anyway, good luck!

I have been following this thread for some time and while i did originally have the problem it seems to have corrected itself.

I have the following setup :

Mac Min (2010) -> Panasonic LX 53 Receiver -> Samsung TV (+ surround speakers).

The setup works fine with the following exceptions:

a) When turning the monitor off (i.e. just for playing music), the signal drops for a few seconds before picking up. This I can live with

b) If the mac mini screensaver kicks in, the signal drops and I have to wiggle the mouse to get the sound back. This is a bit inconvenient as I like using my Mac Mini as music centre + iPhone or iPod Touch as the remote, and basically I need to set the computer to never go to sleep or power off if I need to play music for a while.

Has anyone else had trouble solely with 1080p output? I'm trying to output from my thunderbolt iMac (with Lion 10.7.3) to a Panasonic HDTV. Every resolution works except for 1080p @ 60 hertz (it's fine at 24 hertz). When I try 1080p60, it displays for a few seconds, starts flickering, then my TV says no signal.

I'm connecting my computer directly to my TV; audio works fine.

Is this a Lion issue? Or is it an issue with the cable?

I've read all 20 pages of this thread, tried the SwitchResX solution to no avail, attempted to rename some of the display overrides, but without knowing which one to use and unable to do it to all of them, that did not work either.

Model Name: Mac Mini 5,1

Boot ROM Version: MM51.0077.B10 (EFI 1.6)

TV1: Vizio VL420M - noHDMI to HDMI, works mini DVI (thunderbolt) to VGA

TV2: Hitachi - no HDMI to HDMI, have not tried mini DVI to VGA

TV3: Samsung LN32B540P8D, good HDMI to HDMI, have not tried mini DVI to VGA

TV4: Vizio VX37L - used to work on HDMI to HDMI, but HDMI is fried on that TV, works w/ mini DVI to VGA

I plan to contact Apple soon.

OK perhaps you all have solved this already BUT i figured i'd send this little tidbit on jusst in case. I had terrible video on my Mac mini and samsung D8000 via HDMI and thought i was just going to have to adjust it as best i could and live with it BUT the video is now PERFECT! To begin with my MBP has always worked fine @ 1080P 60Hz via the DVI/ HDMI cable and plugged into the HDMI port labled HDMI/DVI on the TV... Now for the good part.... All i did was plug the HDMI cable into my Mini and use the same DVI/HDMI port and yes the video was awfull.... Then i went to the Video menue (some menues are a bit different so check your manual) open the menue and go to the section that allows you to change the name of specific inputs. Rename the HDMI/DVI input that you have the Mini plugged into to "PC" and save it.... Your choices for "picture mode" will be limited BUT you will be greeted by absolutley beautifull video with the full array of color, brightness and contrast adjustments none of which should be necessary because if you (like me) messed with these in an attempt to make things useable from the start will need to do a reset on these in order to restore them from where WE messed them up.

That's all there is to it..... simply rename the input to "PC" and the TV does the rest.... while you're at it try renaming the others to match your DVR/PVR and Blue Ray player and watch how many other picture options change on these also! I had actually submitted a repair ticket to Samsung because it didn't appear that it was possible to get acceptable HDMI video out of a mini into ANY HDMI port on a samsung TV (others seem to not have this problem) but had it cancelled after finding this out... Now i couldn't be happier with the picture in all modes and from every source. Just make the name match the type of device and the options change accordingly... I hope this helps EVERYONE with the samsung TVs since it's not anywhere in the documentation that came with them the E-Manual inside the TV itself or on line. Have Fun!

My MacBook Pro has suddenly stop communicating with my Philips 3700 via HDMI.

It's worked perfectly fine for the last year and now suddenly nothing.

When I plug into the HDMI, my computer screen does the typical blue screen for a second but doesn't register to the TV. And does not show up in Display preferences.

Now, this computer works with my external Dell monitor just fine.

AND

My older MacBook (non pro) DOES work via HDMI with the TV. The only difference is the cable the connect the HDMI to the 2 mac books (due to the different inputs).

straaaaaange....

Any suggestion?

Thanks in advance!

I recently purchased a Philips 50" T.V. with Internet access via their MediaConnect software. After many attempts to view my desktop on my new T.V. I called Philips support. I was told it appears to be a compatibility problem with Mac's new OS. It appears there are issues with mountain lion running philips mediaconnect software. I was told there was another Philips T.V. owner with a Mac running Moutain Lion having the same problem connecting using MediaConnect program on a Mac. Is apple able to help out in this issue? Apparently, Mac users who have not upgraded to Mountain Lion are not having issues running MediaConnect.

Same problem here with HDMI from mini display port adapter not connecting 2010 Mac Mini to my 82" Mitsubishi. If anyone finds out the fix or hears from Apple directly please post to this forum so we can get this corrected.

Does anyone know the prompts when booting up Lion after initial install? At this point, I'd be happy tonight by figuring out a way to just auto-start iTunes so the two AppleTV's on my other screens would work.

thanks,
