No Signal on HDMI TV After Lion Upgrade

I just installed Lion on my Mac mini and my TV no longer receives a signal over HDMI. I've tried a bunch of different cobinations of restarting the TV and computer without any luck. Without a display, I can't use Screen Sharing to try chaning any of the prefrences. Does anyone have a solution to this problem? Thanks.

For everyone who is having HDTV display and digital audio output problems take the advice of a few of the other posters here and go out and purchase Gefen HDMI Detective Plus. It retails for $129 but Amazon has it for sale for around $80. It will fix your Mac HDMI out video and audio problems period. Yeah it ***** you have to buy it but if you have the HDMI problems it was designed to fix you already have spent several thousand dollars on computer and home theater equipment so what is another $80 to keep everything working right.

By way of background, I have a late 2010 Quadcore I7 Imac, which also doubles as a HTPC for a 7.1 speaker set up in my loft with my Denon 4308CI amp and Panasonic HDTV (via a long 100 ft HDMI run). I use the Imac bluetooth keyboard and trackpad in the living room to control the Imac when viewing on my HDTV. The set up worked great with Snow Leopard until the 10.6.8 update killed my digital audio. I reverted to 10.6.7 to fix the issue until Lion 10.7.1 was released and I read on another Apple thread that the HDMI out issues had been solved. When I upgraded I lost both HDMI video and audio and I was hoping that 10.7.2 would solve the issues but it did not.

Anyhow, I was getting ready to go back to 10.6.7 again but read this whole thread for solutions and stumbled on the Gefen hardware solution. After doing some research it seems that many HTPCs have HDMI out problems with software updates and AV receivers and not just Apple. I bought the product, spoke to Gefen tech support before the set up as their instrucitons are a little unclear but after that I set up the product in no time and now everything is working perfectly once again. Best of all, I don't have to worry now about future software updates killing my HDMI out video and audio again.

BTW, if you use a AV receiver with your Imac just use one of the preset Gefen generic codes at set up as storing your HDTV's EDID in the Gefen may not allow you to push multi channel digital audio as well as video from your Imac.

Hi Mac80

I have been struggling for the past couple weeks since I purchased my Mac Mini (a few weeks back) to connect to the Samsung B2430 LCD monitor directly via HDMI-HDMI but to no avail i.e. "no connection detected"

Fyi HDMI-DVI works, but I just wanted the HDMI-HDMI instead.

I did exactly what you advised i.e. pull out the HDMI cable from the Mac Mini; power up & power down the Mac Mini; reconnect the HDMI cable to the Mac Mini; power up again... Wooa...lla... for some strange reason & though somewhat "primitive":-) ... It works. It can now detect my monitor at 1080p. I just shut down and switch it on again to make sure that it is not a fluke, it works!

Fyi I just acquired another Samsung LED 27" monitor SA550 (same problem as above inititially but got it working via the above approach)

Thanks alot Mac80 and really appreciate it!

I had the same exact problem after upgrading - wish I had seen this thread before I did.

But .... seems I am not having this issue any longer - here is what I did.

Downloaded the EFI 1.5 patch for MacMini

Ran Software updates to get to 10.7.3 and every other update that was available.

Rebooted after update

Updated the EFI 1.5 rebooted

Ran saftware updates once more, said all was up to date.

Each reboot since has worked with HDMI cable attached.

My Configuration, just so you all know did not change from the Snot Leapord to Lion upgrade. I plugged in a RGB monitor to the miniDisplay port during this process.

Mac Mini Plugged into Denon 2112 reciever which is plugged into Epson Projector all via HDMI.

Hope this helps someone else - this is my first post here on these forums.

Thanks,

-rp-

I have a workaround, it ***, but i couldnt stand it anymore... I had an unusable media system otherwise.

I purchased a toslink cable (minijack -> optical audio) and placed the macmini hdmi directly on the tv (pioneer kuro krp500).

Now it works, Video goes off the TV and audio goes out of the received via the optical audio.

When I contacted Yamaha they told me it was a faulty receiver (which is not). I tried with 3 different hdmi cables, one of them 1.4 with return audio, and a minidisplayport to hdmi and all had the issue. All those cables handshake perfectly with other devices and the received, except the macmini...

I am having that same issue with my mac mini. I tried two things one of which or maybe both worked. I first tried to reset the PRAM and NVRAM. This allowed me to boot into recovery mode, but did not transfer my account. I then restarted it and waited to plug the HDMI in for about 2 minutes. When I did plug it in, it worked fine. Until this is fixed I will be avoiding a restart at all costs. Hopefully this helps.

If you have Screen sharing enabled in System Preferences > Sharing on the Mini, just click on your Mini in a Finder window on your Pro and at the top of the right pane you should have two buttons, Connect As and Share Screen. I always have it enabled since it's the easiest way to get access to my Mini when I need to do something that requires a keyboard or mouse.

Refresh Rate: 50 Herta (PAL) to 60 Hertz (NTSC)

Rotation: Standard

Underscan: 6th mark from the left (right in the middle)

Checked Show profiles for this display only

After my recent research, EDID issues among computers and AVRs is a common problem with both Windows and Mac OS. Computers may be compliant, but struggle due to their ability to adjust their frequency or resolution. For me, hdmi direct into the TV was worked without an issue. It's when shaking hands with the AVR and then trying to shake hands with the TV that caused problems with both Snow Leopard and Lion. For about a week, Lion was working fine. But we had a power outage and it all went sour again. It was frustrating during a movie when Ihad several people wonder why it doesn't just work. I could have just plugged the hdmi into the TV and then used the optical into my AVR. That worked under every circumstance. But I wanted the ability to have one hdmi from the AVR to the TV and be able to easily swith from Uverse TV, PS3, and my mini. The Pioneer AVR has an pretty cool app for the iPhone/iPad that works under this sceanario. The price of the Gefen product was worth it to me. If you don't want to pay for an EDID dective, why not just plug your hdmi direct into the TV?

I bought a Mac Mini (2011 - 2,5 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5) last Saturday here in Germany. It had Lion OS X 10.7 installedand and I had no chance to get a picture (after the white boot screen) on my Philips 42pfl9903H Aurea (HDMI to HDMI). Yesterday, at the Genius Bar in Oberhausen, we upgraded to 10.7.2 and Efi Firmware 1.4. Everything seems to be fine now (1080P 60Hz)! By the way, the update also removed obvious bugs with the Thunderbolt Display which we used during the process.

Well, now my shared screen solution isn't helping anymore either...

But, by pulling the HDMI cable from my Mac Mini and putting it back in, I get the connection back. Sounds a bit 1970's, I know, but as long as there's no fix (or at least some feedback on the issue) from Apple I'll just have to pull the plug.

As for the copy protection you're talking about Ziatron, I sure hope this isn't the case. That would just be TOO stupid! A copy protection courtesy of Apple that makes my Apple product malfunction...?
