Dec 8, 2011 4:31 PM in response to sfatulaby Ziatron,We all wish HDMI were that simple (and really, it SHOULD be).
Welcome to the wonderful world of copy protection.
Your display may not be on the "approved" list, or was removed from it.
Apple's newer Mac lines includes a form of digital copy protection that will prevent protected media, such as DRM-infused iTunes movies, from playing back on devices that aren't compliant with the new priority protection measures.
The Intel-developed technology is called High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) and aims to prevent copying of digital audio and video content as it travels across a variety of display connectors, even if such copying is not in violation of fair use laws.
Among the connectors supported by the technology are the Mini DisplayPort found on Apple's latest MacBook, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air, in addition to others such as Digital Visual Interface (DVI), High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI), Gigabit Video Interface (GVIF), and Unified Display Interface (UDI).
Apple has apparently acquired a license for the technology and is now using it across its lines to to prevent transmission of purchased iTunes content (and some DVDs) to devices that don't include support for HDCP.
The problem can often be solved by using an HDMI to Component Video adapter. Many believe that Component Video will give you a better HD picture than HDMI without any of the hassles of HDCP.

Dec 9, 2011 11:04 AM in response to Ratboyby Robert Ronning,Well, now my shared screen solution isn't helping anymore either...
But, by pulling the HDMI cable from my Mac Mini and putting it back in, I get the connection back. Sounds a bit 1970's, I know, but as long as there's no fix (or at least some feedback on the issue) from Apple I'll just have to pull the plug.
As for the copy protection you're talking about Ziatron, I sure hope this isn't the case. That would just be TOO stupid! A copy protection courtesy of Apple that makes my Apple product malfunction...?

Jan 2, 2012 11:23 PM in response to Ratboyby dakarlo,Hopefully this gets solved in a future update or release but in the meantime I have found a fix that works for me while letting me use LION.
I've gone through the entire update process twice to Lion losing my audio both attempts via HDMI but not my video before wiping and re-installing Leporard only to get everything back.
FOR ME what has worked for the past two months is upgrading to Lion 10.7. Everything works fine. If I further upgrade to 10.7.2 under "Software Update" I lose my audio. So here I've sat for the past past 2 months.
Just refrain from pushing that update button...LOL
Cheers
Dakarlo

Jan 19, 2012 10:44 AM in response to Ratboyby Abols,Hi there,
I bought a brand new MBP 13'' a couple months ago, updated to Lion 10.7.2 and installed all the software updates available up to yesterday, Jan 18.
Today I made my first attempt to connect my Samsung LED TV to the MBP using the same cable and HDMI port I've been using for 18 months to watch movies from my HP Envy notebook without a single problem.
After plugging the HDMI cable to the Thundebolt -> HDMI adapter my Samsung TV showed a "Waiting for signal" sign on screen for about 15 seconds, followed by a "No Signal" sign. I tried every single solution from this thread: unplugging the HDMI cable, plugging it again, turning off and on the tv, turning off and on the MBP with and without the HDMI cable attached, etc. I had no luck, the "No Signal" sign was always there.
Then I plugged the HDMI cable again to my HP Envy and it worked like a charm, so the MBP was the problem.
My Samsung TV have 4 HDMI inputs (HDMI 1 to 4). I always used HDMI-1 from my Envy without a problem, but decided to give a try with the other ports. HDMI-2 and HDMI-3 showed the same issue, but when I plugged the cable to HDMI-4 the screen suddenly became blue for a few seconds, my MBP recongized the Samsung TV and finally the problem was solved.
Curiosity took me further in my "investigation" about this strange issue, so I plugged the HDMI cable back to HDMI-1 port and it worked. Also HDMI-2 and 3 are working now!
Does anybody experienced something like this? Mi external display now works flawlessly, but the solution was even stranger than the problem.
Greets,
Nicolás.

Jan 19, 2012 12:20 PM in response to Ratboyby Robert Ronning,Hi Nicolas, and welcome to the club.
Not sure if the HDMI port #4 solution really solved your problem or if it was just luck. I'm saying this because it's a hit or miss if or when I get a signal from my Mac mini. Sometimes it helps just pulling out the HDMI cable from my mini and putting it back in. Other times I have to do the full restart of both TV and receiver... AND the Mac mini.
Let us know if you experience the problem again... and what you did when it happened.

Jan 24, 2012 11:56 PM in response to Ratboyby Old-School,I found a real answer and none of you, and I hope Apple, will like it. I hope Apple hates the answer so maybe Apple will do two things - distribute an upgrade with a fix and FIRE the SOB that deleted the driver that was in the previous OS.
The fix is simple - Bootcamp - dual boot to Windos 7. Works GREAT for every 1080i and 1080P I have tried so far (Phillips, Samsung, Westinghouse).
How is that Apple!!!!
Fix this problem. Until then, I will be runing Windows on my Mac for all my video needs - seems to defeat the purpose of buying Apple.

Jan 28, 2012 10:29 PM in response to Ratboyby raduga,Wow.
Just want to add my name to this long list. Same problem. My Panasonic HDTV no longer works via HDMI ever since Lion upgrade.
Very surprising that this hasn't been addressed yet with a fix from Apple...

Jan 28, 2012 10:43 PM in response to radugaby canettijazz,Apple issued a firmware update for some Mac models including the mid-2010 mini this past week. The notes only refer to Lion recovery so I'm not holding out hope that it includes a fix for this HDMI issue. Apparently, this is not big enough of a problem for Apple to address as a high priority, so please log a support issue with Apple or if your unit is still fairly new, contact Applecare.

Feb 2, 2012 12:39 AM in response to canettijazzby spaya,I just upgraded my mac mini server 2011 to lion 10.7.3, and the problem is still the same or even worse, as the flickering now occurs in faster intervals, tried with HDMI to HDMI and MDisplayPort to HDMI.
For the record the MDisplayPort cable used to work perfectly on my mac mini 2010 and MBP 2010, and the HDMI cable is the one I used on my ATV2 which is still working ok, so its not a cable problem...
I just dont understand how it is possible that if I connect it directly to my Pioneer Kuro TV it will output ok (no speakers on TV), but if I connect it directly to my Yamaha RX-V467 and the receiver to my Kuro it will just flicker nonstop... R.I.D.I.C.U.L.O.U.S
Apple please do something.
thanks.

Feb 3, 2012 6:31 AM in response to spayaby Gogolathome,I had similar problems since 10.7.2 update and after a lot of trial and error I found out it was the HDMI cable. This cable worked perfectly on 10.7.1 (even after downgrading to 10.7.1 from 10.7.2 with Time Machine) so I did not search for a problem with the HDMI cable.
It is worth a try!

Feb 5, 2012 10:37 AM in response to Gogolathomeby Robert Ronning,I just tried switching to my PS3 HDMI cable... and VOLIA! I got instant connection. If this simply is an HDMI cable issue I will be so pleased! Time will tell.
Thanks for the tip.

Feb 5, 2012 1:45 PM in response to Ratboyby rcperkinsjr,I had the same exact problem after upgrading - wish I had seen this thread before I did.
But .... seems I am not having this issue any longer - here is what I did.
Downloaded the EFI 1.5 patch for MacMini
Ran Software updates to get to 10.7.3 and every other update that was available.
Rebooted after update
Updated the EFI 1.5 rebooted
Ran saftware updates once more, said all was up to date.
Each reboot since has worked with HDMI cable attached.
My Configuration, just so you all know did not change from the Snot Leapord to Lion upgrade. I plugged in a RGB monitor to the miniDisplay port during this process.
Mac Mini Plugged into Denon 2112 reciever which is plugged into Epson Projector all via HDMI.
Hope this helps someone else - this is my first post here on these forums.
Thanks,
-rp-

Feb 11, 2012 5:58 PM in response to rcperkinsjrby TeamHCN,Is there a status update for this? I bought a Mac Mini Snow Leo Server to go with my Samsung D6000, and have it connected via HDMI. Does this mean I should hold off upgrading to Lion?
