Unable to install Lion - S.M.A.R.T. errors on my hard drive???

Unable to install Lion on a 27 inch 3.06 Intel Core 2 Duo iMac running OS 10.6.8. When I am presented with install options, my HD option is dimmed and there is a message: "This disk has S.M.A.R.T. errors. This disk has a hardware problem that can't be repaired. Back up as much of the data as possible and replace the disk."

I have not had ANY problems with this iMac since purchasing it and other than being unable to install Lion it seems to be working just fine, and yet now I'm told that my hard drive is unrepairable.

Is this a glitch in the Lion Installer or should I be more concerned?

Any info appreciated... now it seems I've paid $30 for a download I can't use. Grrrrrr....

The S.M.A.R.T. status is the drive itself reporting its health. I would tend to believe it if it's saying it is failing.

When was the last time people ran Disk Utility to check the S.M.A.R.T. status before installing Lion?

Was it maybe an issue people just weren't aware of before?

In any event, it does seem to be a call to backup and have it checked out.

I am one of those, ran disk utility alomst once a week - never a glitch, downloaded Lion, installed it and had the smart error. I tend to say that the night before there were no errors !

Still now I have, but my machine is still in warranty. so under Ducth law, i will get it working for free. But the time it costst. Worst, Apple doesn't believe you, so plenty of pics befoire something start moving. So i enlisted the largets dutch pc / apple magazine. we'll see.

Thta's why i say - writing you on my faulty mac, it's sw driven.

Hi from Belgium.

My iMac apperars to have partially the same problems as you all have. When I installed Lion from the AppStore it became extremely slow, the spinning wheel keeping spinning for hours. I reinstalled Snow Leopard (clean install) and restored via TM (internal HD and two external disks). I'm really getting mad about this because under SL the Imac is much slower than before. Aperture library seems corrupted. Does anybody can tell me how to downgrade definitely back to SL, expecting Apple to come with un upgrade of Lion.

To all: I did not change the internal HD (WD 320 Go). So supposing not to be qualified for a replacement 😟

What makes me mad is the smooth Lion install on my 2007 MBP. How about that ?

On my 24 inch 2008 iMac still having problems with Lion, hard reboot (on/off button) often necessary, with various apps, like Aperture, Firefox etc. Plese anyone ? Apple ? Jobs ?

I have a Mac Pro Quad core from 2007. It upgraded to Lion fine but yesterday I noticed one of the four internal drives was showing S.M.A.R.T. status fail, it wasn't even the OS drive. So I powered down, removed the drive and swapped its position with one of the other internal drives. Powered it straight back up and the staus fail was gone, in fact the status read "verified" on the disc that only one minute before had read fail.

In conclusion.....I don't get it. It can't be a hardware fault as it would have moved with the drive?

This screams to me that it's software?
