Lion resets my wallpaper to default "galaxy" pic after every restart

I applied a new desktop wallpaper to replace default Lion "galaxy" picture, but every time I shut down/restart my computer it replaces it back to the default picture. Is anyone else having issues with your wallpaper not being saved after restarts?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7)

I thought the problem was the properties files holding the settings could not be written or something like that.

I've been playing for a while with the properties files holding settings for "dock" & "desktop"

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist holding desktop settings

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist holding dock settings

both seem to reflect correctly changes I make on background picture, and remove Facetime from dock

then, I log off & on again... desktop displays galaxy image, and facetime icon is back on dock....

Anybody with a fresh idea?

Here is how I fixed. I assumed that the issue is iPhoto takes to long to start or "mount" (as in my case using disk utility).

I dragged the picture I wanted to use from the iPhoto event to the desktop, renamed it and dragged it into a shared folder in finder.

Then I selected that picture using the + icon under System Preferences>Desktop and Screensavers.

Tried it a few times and it works after every restart.

I have just been downloading a wallpaper from the internet, not using iphoto. But I tried what you said and put the downloaded picture in my "pictures" folder, then selected it through system preferences>desktop and screensavers. It seems to be working just fine.

In snow leopard, however, I could use an image for my wallpaper then delete it, but it would still be my desktop image. In Lion, once I delete the original image used as my wallpaper, it reverts back to the galaxy picture. I realize the solution is to just not delete the image, but it's annoying that such a simple process is now complex.

Hi All,

I think I got the answer!!!!

Even though Lion displays all available pictures within "/Library/Desktop Pictures" folder and subfolders. It seems it can only handle pictures at first level... ie not in any sub-folders...

To solve the problem, before a real fix, just copy all the pictures you want from their initial folder to the main "/Library/Desktop Pictures" folder

Voilà

ps : I'm still having problem with Dock and "Reopening windows option" not saved correctly...

I have the same problem, plus one or two others since installing Lion, like in some applications it doesn't remember the document I was in before and I have to find it each time.

My question is that I also have my pictures in IPhoto but when I tried to copy them I can't find a folder called /Library/Desktop Pictures. I also cannot see where Apple puts the default wallpapers as I thought I could put mine there as well.

Nothing yet has fixed this for me.

I don't use iPhoto for this but instead have had a folder on an external hard drive for years where I store wallpapers.

I tried copying them to the /Library/Desktop Pictures/ folder on the internal hard drive to see if it has anything to do with the external HD mounting too late, but it's not working either. Sometimes my wallpaper is displayed after booting, sometimes it's the default galaxy wallpaper. I've since moved the folder back to the external hard drive.

I tried setting a wallpaper rotation so that OS X changes to my selected wallpaper folder after 15 minutes, but that doesn't work either: When the galaxy wallpaper is displayed on start-up, it stays like that, ignoring my settings in the system preferences.
