Does MagicJack work with Lion? Should I wait to upgrade since I use MagicJack?

I am wanting to upgrade to Lion, but I can't get a clear answer from MagicJack.

Does anyone know if it works with Lion?

iMac 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

As I do not use MagicJack at the moment, I can't tell you for sure, but it will probably work. It is an Intel application (it doesn't even work on the older PowerPC machines) and so it won't be affected by the lack of Rosetta in Lion. However, there may be other compatibility issues. If you have an external dirve or more than one Macintosh, you could install Lion on one of those and test it yourself.

Or perhaps someone else has already tested it?

My experience has been that magicJack crashes unexpectedly after an interval ranging from 45-90 minutes. I just restart it and it works fine... for another 45-90 minutes.

After extensive discussion on magicJack Chat I have tried:

1. Loading the magicJack upgrade that's available - didn't work

2. The usual unplugging and re-starting magicJack routine - didn't work

3. Deleting the preference file in ~/Library/magicJack - didn't work

The last crash log shows:

Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)

Exception Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS at 0x0000000018a23a20

I'd be interested to know whether anyone has a solution.

Thanks!

I'm running a Mac Mini with Lion. I've done the "Mac Update" That Magic Jack has on their website.

Magic Jack crashes at least once, sometimes multiple times per day. Error message I get is "Magic Jack Quit Unexpectedly". I contacted their customer support and was told that their software currently is not fullly compatible. They said they dont know when they will have a software update and that "it will work at least sometimes."

Lacking in terms of customer service...

MagicJack doesn't work on Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion). It crashes every hour or so. Their tech support acknowledges there is a problem using MagicJack on Lion.

Frankly, my experience with MagicJack is that it highly unreliable and virtually unusable as a replacement for your home phone. I'm relying more on my cell phone now and will probably discontinue using MagicJack before long.

MagicJack worked well for us with a MacMini(2010) and SnowLeopard. It began failing as soon as we upgraded to Lion - running for 60-90 minutes then crashing... (not always the same crash - here are a few i copied from the crash report)

So we "retrograded" back to Snow Leopard, and the MJ is happy again. I keep downloading magicJackSetup.dmg looking for its md5sum to change, but so far nothing... the caht seems unable to make a connection to development folks to get a real status report towards fixing this...

I am happy to report success with magicJack.

Being a determined sort of fellow I decided that I would spend as much time with the magicJack support people as they would tolerate to solve this problem. I connected with them and was bucked from Level 1 to Level to Level 3 support. I answered all their questions and did everything that they asked me to do.

When I was done, nothing changed. The magicJack app still crashed and I just restarted it time and again.

The next day, I noticed that it was no longer crashing! It hasn't crashed in 4 days now and it works perfectly.

The support engineer that I worked with was very thankful for the help and the crash logs. Apparently that's what they needed to solve the problem.

Good on you magicJack and Apple!

Basically they were going through their routine troubleshooting tree. This took quite a while. It included running their firmware upgrade (which I had previously run but did so again anyway so as to not give them any excuse).

magicJack ultimately crashed of it's own accord and so I pasted the crashlog into the chat window (in pieces because the chat window can't take the whole thing at once).

There's not much else to say except capture the entire exchange in a text file and provide it back to them. Keep track of every issue number and provide that too.

I did find that every now and then the Mac has to be restarted to unscramble it's USB brains. I have printers, scanners, tablets, mice, magicJack, iPhone, and other things plugged into my USB ports. The magicJack is always plugged into a port right on the iMac although I have also had no trouble with it plugged into a hub.

If you have specific questions I'll try to answer them.

I'm glad you have a working magicJack with Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion). Frankly, I'm puzzled why yours is working and mine isn't, as I don't see you've done anything different than I have in trying to find a fix for the magicJack crashes. I think it's not accurate to state unequivocally that the issue with magicJack and Lion has been solved until people like myself have some experiences that support your claim.
