transferring data from iPhone to Mobile me account as back up..

Is this possible.

I put a post up stating that my laptop was stolen and all that I have for backed up data is my music, contacts, photos, calendar.

Is there a way that I can back up this information from my iPhone 3GS and upload it to a friend's .me account?

Then download the iPhone data on to a new MBP?

Please I need some guidnece from this and Apple is telling me that I can only email myself the contacts (over 500) and photos

and then manually extract them on to a new Apple laptop.

I find this hard to believe.

much appreciate the help from anyone .. sigh Aimee

A few questions/statements...you could manually create an iPhone backup on a friend's computer(if you have access to a friend's computer), then use a third-party backup extractor to extract all of the data from your iPhone backup. However, photos synced to your phone or music synced to your phone...all iTunes content is NOT part of the iPhone backup. If the music on your phone was purchased through iTunes, and you're in the US, that and all of your apps can easily be re-downloaded to iTunes right now. Photos synced to your phone are another problem, they were reduced in resolution for display on your phone. There is no way to recover their full resolution, and extracting them from your phone would require another third-party app, as they are not part of the iPhone backup. In essence, you can recover all of the data, currently on your phone, with a little effort. This would obviously be easier if you had your own computer.

Wjosten,

Yes, I've a friend's computer that we can attempt to do this. I understand that the resolution of the photos

once extracted will be low. This will be the fact of my remaining images that I have elsewhere online.

It's been a devasting hit to close to 2 decades of work.

How about the Safari bookmarks, calendar, contacts, music.. will this be part of the back up on to my friend's

computer and/or can this be done on to the friend's mobile me account? That's what we're trying to figure out.

I'm awaiting the arrival of the new laptop in a few days. But in the mean time I like to make sure I have enough

information so when the time comes I can transfer all the contacts, images, music, etc.. from the iPhone on to

another source (ie mobile me, friend's laptop) then back to the new laptop.

Hope this makes sense.. one wrong source of information could cause me to lose all what I have. 😟

Do this:

On your friends computer, create another user account for you. Launch iTunes, and under preferences(under the edit menu if using Windows) disable auto-sync when an iPod/iPhone is connected. Connect your phone & right-click the phone in the left device pane & select "Backup". DO NOT SYNC. Eject your phone when finished. This document will tell you what's included in the iPhone backup & where that backup is stored:

Regarding the iTunes purchased content on your phone, don't worry about that right now. Are you in the US? If so, that can all be re-downloaded to your new computer, when you get it.

For your photos and non-purchased iTunes Music, you'll need third-party software to extract them from your phone. If using a Mac, get this:

If using Windows, get this:

That's all you need to do right now. When you get your new computer, post back & I'll give you detailed instructions on how to setup syncing with your new computer, transfer all of your data & have your phone looking the same way it is with all of your data intact.

By doing the above, for right now, you will have in essence backed up your phone.

Wjosten, thank you!!

I hope I can get all of the information on my iPhone backed up and on to the new laptop (still awaiting it's arrival!) . I'm guessing this will include calendar, contacts, photos, music, safari bookmarks (I hope!).

Could you clear this up with me?

I will follow up and I'm made VERY clear about checking in iTunes preferences NOT to automatically sync

the iPhone. I notice (possibly from last sync on the computer) that I have less music on my iPhone. I made some changes and didn't check not to have it automatically sync. But that doesn't matter as I no longer have that computer.
