You cannot automatically sort the launchpad. It behaves manually like iOS applications.

This would be an excellent "feature" to add to both iOS and Launchpad. We need to be able to "sort by" on all the platforms. Where can I suggest or vote for this feature?
Hi, you can automatically sort LaunchPad. It's just a bit of a roundabout way, you reset LaunchPad then when it rebuilds it will put Apple apps in one screen, then alphabetically sort all other apps in remaining screens. Check out: http://osxdaily.com/2011/08/01/refresh-launchpad-in-mac-os-x-10-7-lion/
The article gives two possible solutions. (1) Killall Dock from the command line. Didn't work. (2) Delete the Dock database file. That worked. But you also have to force the Launchpad to rebuild its database. Since I had Terminal open already, I did 'Killall Dock' again. It reloads the Dock and relaunches Launchpad, thus rebuilding the database. Reorder of applications in Lauchpad will be complete.
This is a way better alternative to having another app using resources to manage the appearence of Lauchpad.
The second terminal command listed in the article shared by TestAliasAlias works great (I used it on Mavericks):
rm ~/Library/Application\ Support/Dock/*.db ; killall Dock
But please note, as he has mentioned too, that above will sort all Apple applications on one page/screen and the rest of the apps will be sorted alphabetically in the rest of the pages/screen.
Use this app >> http://chaosspace.de/launchpad-control
It's a launch pad control, I could adjust or remove or even hide some app I don't want in launch pad
I know this is an old post, But I got a new thing for this old question...
I had the same issue. And Luckily I got following app, and this works great 🙂

I hope this can help you ..
You mean Apple still doesn't provide this feature?
On Yosemite and El Capitan, the easiest way to rearrange Launchpad's icons lexicographically is setting the
ResetLaunchPad
property to true
and relaunching the Dock. This doesn't need any third-party software, like the one you suggested. Just run this command:defaults write com.apple.Dock ResetLaunchPad -bool true && killall Dock

Thanks for the idea. Tho, I'm just a non-tech, low life "user". I don't really run commands.
Come on Apple, get with it!
Works perfectly, simple approach even for a non-Terminal expert like me...
Thank you for sharing!
Yup. Copy and paste in Terminal. Exactly what I wanted.
Thanks homie!
This didn't seem to do it for me. My Launchpad has like 5 pages though. Does the computer need to be rebooted after you make that change? or should it take effect instantly?
