Preview Issues for OS Lion

If you click the "custom size" box on the scan input form that is displayed when you choose "Import From Scanner", you can then slide the boundaries to select the area you want. I do agree that the new preview leaves a lot to be desired though - when you "export" a file you can change the quality, but unlike in Snow Leopard, Preview does not give you an indication of the size of the file that will be saved. Custom Quartz filters that you have created cannot be used directly from Preview as in Snoe Leopard - you have to save or "export" the unmodified file, and then open it using ColorSync to apply your custom filters. Many other minor issues which impeded Preview's previously excellent usablility.

1. Open a PDF, save as JPG, the Tools > Adjust size menu item is grayed out. This is a regression from 10.6.

2. Try to crop the image, Preview reports that when cropping a PDF parts of the image outside the crop are maintained. This doesn't make sense for a JPG.

3. Save the JPG file, close the window and try to open it again. Preview reports that the file is damaged or an unrecongizable format.

I've reported these issue on the MacOS feedback page. That page has a bug of its own in that the OS version pull-down menu does not list 10.7 as a choice.

By size, do you mean Quality / resolution? Works fine.

Ignore the message, click OK, it crops.

3. Save the JPG file, close the window and try to open it again. Preview reports that the file is damaged or an unrecongizable format.

Works perfectly here.

Well I guess that's good to report, but Apple must go crazy with stuff like this. My guess: any problems like this have something to do with preview supporting versions, and versions is work in progress for sure. Cheers!

Ahh, You are correct, My particular problem appeared to be related to the fact that the PDF I am using is a mail attachment. Because there is no Save As... menu, when you try to save a version, it tells you that the mail download is locked and gives you the option of creating a duplicate. I created a duplicate, which changes the Save Versions menu entry to Save. Then I save as a JPG. Attempting to open this JPG gives me the error of corrupt or unreconizable file.

What I really should have done was File > Export to JPG. Then it works.

Or transgression! I agree, Apple needs to work on versioning a bit more before it will be ready for the masses.

I'm confused about what u are trying to do now. Are you trying to resize an image being previewed by using the handles like this:

That box is primarily used for crop, as far as I know. You can resize the output (as I described above) but image editing within preview is limited. I think that's why they call it "Preview." 🙂

Krike, people use preview when scanning documents? Sorry, I don't think I can help as we use scanning software on our Canons and the files go direct to PDF, jpeg, whatever, but never to preview. Perhaps the scanning software that you are using is doing something to the file that Lion does not like...like mashing the file into a singe page instead of multiples, as does the PDF-compliant scanner MP Navigator X from canon - results in preview look like this and work fine:

The resize (crop) from preview does still work, but it works quite a bit differently. First, after scanning, if you not set to "Custom size" do so". If it is set to Custom size, unclick it and then reclick it so it is again set to "Custom size" again (not sure why you sometimes have to do this). Then you can move the borders of the scan area (not using the corners - but by grabbing near the center of one of the four borders). I do not like this nearly as much as the corner spots used by Snow Leopard.

I'm having an issue when opening a file in preview and multiple other files open as well. This is very annoying, is there any fix to this?

We can't suggets "a fix" for "an issue" that you haven't described.

What issue are you having?

Whenever I open a file in preview, 3 or 4 other unrelated files will open automatically in preview as well. This is something that just starting happening after I upgraded to lion. I'm not sure if this is supposed to be a 'feature', but it's pretty annoying.

Apps resume when launched

When you launch an application, it appears exactly as you left it. All the open windows, palettes, and panes — even the cursor position and highlighted text — come back just as they were.

To get around that, close all windows before exiting Preview.

Has anyone else been experiencing issues with Preview when cropping? Often times when cropping it will rotate part of or all of the photo once I press "command K". I have been experiencing this issue ever since I upgraded to Lion and am wondering if this is an isolated incident.
