Disk not ejected properly

After installing Lion yesterday I keep getting a window popping up from time to time with the red excllamation point saying the disk was not ejected properly.

But at no time had I disconnected anything. Just woring on the iMac.

There doesn't seem to be a way to find out what supposed drive/disk was ejected.

Any ideas or anyone else seeing this or know how to figure out what disk/drive the error message is referring to?

I have been fighting this for about two years.

It basically comes down to "Apple has no idea of what is causing it".

I have EXTENSIVELY tried to solve it, including but not limited to, substituting a new external HD.

Very disappointed with this situation.

A while ago I had quite a discussion between Pondini and myself describing all the efforts I went thru including going thru Apple after service, etc.

While I cannot provide a solution for you, this is what I do myself when I get the message.

I disconnect the external drive, wait about two minutes and reconnect it again. Works fine and just have to repeat this procedure almost every day.

I would give you the post of all the effort I went thru but unfortunately I changed my user account and now I cannot access it / nor find it.

I just noticed this today for the first time after I tried to eject the external USB HD by throwing it in the trash. I just upgraged from Snow L. to Lion Since my HD is partitioned, it always asks me if I want to eject both drives, and I say yes. Today, I said yes and the icons of both partitions became more translucent, but the icons were still there. Dropping them into trash again did not do anything. I finally pulled the USB cord and it complained that I disconnected the drive improperly. That is strange for a mac. I never noticed this with Snow L. so I am not sure if this is from Lion

As I have been working on the iMac this weekend I did find what I think is the pattern. When the error window popped up I went to Finder>Steves iMac and saw that my external Seagate 2TB GoFlex drive, with Mac Backup and Windows Backup partitions, had dismounted. Within a minute or so they automatically remounted. So I just minimized the Finder and the next time I got the error message I popped up Finder and the same thing. Later I noticed that a Time Machine backup was in process so I brought up the finder window and, sure enough, when it stopped the error message came up and the Seagate dismounted. So my thinking is it has to do with the TM backups on my external drive. Now the only question is how to fix it, if that's even possible right now! It's pretty annoying to be focused on working on something and have that **** error window pop up..... Grrrrr!

I am getting the exact same problem after upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion yesterday night. It relates to a Sandisk Cruiser 16GB USB drive in my case. It was permanently connected to my iMac as a destination for auto back ups of certain data. I never had a problem before. Now I get that message a few minutes after putting in the device. Sometimes it reconnects and again I will get that message after a few minutes before it disconnects again. At one stage, when it was connected, I correctly ejected the USB drive to make sure it was done properly. But it happened again a few minutes after reconnecting it.

I even changed the USB port used from one at the rear to one on the keyboard and it still happens. I have another USB drive (4GB and different brand) that works no problem when I plug in.

Same problem here. MacBook Pro, Lion and 2 Maxtor eternal HD's. I get the error everytme I wake the computer. Data seems ok, and backup apear to wolrk (havent had to test it though). One drive is a data drive the other backs up the entire system (+data drive). when I eject the data drive from finder it works, if I turn off timemachine then eject the backup disk it works fine (if I dont turn off time machine first then I get the greyed out image of that drive in the finder). It seems to be a sleep issue, Lion wont eject the disc before it spools down its own HD.

If you're using a Seagate GoFlex drive, then you need to install GoFlex for Mac 1.1.2:

I document how I discovered this in my blog post:

If your not using a Seagate drive, a similar problem issue be causing your problem.

same problem here ... I also noticed that with Lion my Macbook Pro competely puts itself to sleep when not used for a period of time ... with Snow Leopard my scrren would eventually turn off but when I swiped the touchpad it would immedialtely be at the last screen I was using on my desktop .... now with Lion it is necessary to actually push on the touch screen in order to wake it ... not sure if this makes a difference in why we are getting the eject improperly warning... anyone have any ideas on that??

Hi, I am experiencing the same issue. I did a fresh instal of Lion about four months ago and then about a month ago, I started to get this message. "The disk was not ejected properly. If possible, always eject a disk before unplugging it or turning it off...." Mine doesn't give me a disk name to know which disk was disconnected and I have four external hard drives to choose from. I have a firewire hard drive for Time Machine and three other USB hard drives for storage.

GREAT blog post. Thanks so much David. You just saved my iMac from the trash. I was SO FRUSTRATED with this error that kept appearing and I realized it was because I had two Seagate drives going to sleep and they were legitimately ejecting Here I thought it was just a repeating error message from iMac. I had used the drives on a PC with no problems so I just installed this seagate software and noticed that it even came in the contents of my newer seagate drive.

I have been getting this problem too! Although I am usually unable to figure out which disk was 'not ejected properly' because when I check in the finder sidebar, all my external devices seem to be connected and accessible. I do have a Seagate Freeagent. But the previous time I got this error, it wasn't even connected in the first place. It is certainly very weird!

Same issue here with my Western Digital and Firelight external HD's. Seems to always occur when I wake the MAC from sleep although it's intermittant. I keep all my media on the WD HD and access it regularly. Fortunatly it doesn't happen to often or I'd be seriously ****** since I use the Remote app on my 4S to control iTunes that connects to the main sound system in the house. Not to mention the videos that I access via the Apple TV. This needs to be corrected.
