Can't open new Lion Mail? - Try delete the file "Envelope index"!

Problem: can't start Mail.app after installing Lion. Mail.app repeatedIy crash when you accept the database upgrade.

Possible solution:

  1. In Finder use Go to Folder... and type "~/Library/Mail".
  2. Delete the index file "Envelope index".
  3. Start Mail and it should work nicely.

If you fear to delete it, move it to the Desktop. Go to step 3. If Mail works, it's safe to delete the file.

This simple solution is found on many comments in this forum.

Mac OS X (10.7)-OTHER, Mac OS X (10.7), Mail.app

Hello all. I tried this fix ie removing the smartmailbox .plist files and it did not work for me, it was still stuck upgrading mailboxes - so I then removed all .plist files in the library/mail folder and all sub directories.

The upgrade then completed.

These .plist files often cause problems and can be safely removed because the program will rebuild them if they can't find the originals so no harm done.

Hope this helps.

Great Dnew. Had the same problem, but now everything seem to work.

I had another strange problem though - I couldnt find my library folder, which drew me crazy. I knew very well where it should be, but the folder was gone from my user directory.

I googled that and come up with this solution:

The library folder seem to be hidden as default in Lion for some of us, but with the suggested solution my library folder came back :-) , and the plist-files could be removed.

Cheers
