Lion Safari Download Problems

OK, I have seen this on two systems now. I need to update some applications. For example DefaultFolderX. If I go to the DefaultFolderX web site and hit the download button the page updates to a blank black/grey background, and the address bar shows the following:

http://stclairsoft.s3.amazonaws.com/DefaultFolderX-4.4.2.dmg

According to what I have read there should be a small icon to the very right of the search field that opens the download dialog, that never appears. Likewise, I have SpeedDownload and have verified that I have the SpeedDownload plugin ENABLED in Safari (and I verified I have the Lion compatible version of SpeedDownload), so SpeedDownload should be the default downloader for Safari, that is not happening. I even DISABLED SpeedDownload to make sure it was not the problem, no change. I killed all Safari extensions, no change.

Yet if I use Firefox and go to the same URL as above and click on download I get the normal download dialog and can save the DMG.

This is happening at multiple web sites, not just the URL shown above, in fact I have not been able to get ANY DMG file to download with the Lion version of Safari. Something seems terribly broken.

Any ideas beyond what I have tried, or did Apple release the new version of Safari with a pretty major bug in it? (And again this is happening on two very different systems.)

I found the problem. I had to completely uninstall SpeedDownload, restart the system, dleete all SpeedDownload files in the trash, then start Safari and try to download and it worked as expected, the little icon appears to the right of the search box and the file is not actually downloaded.

Looks like SpeedDownload has some work to do.

Did you do the SpeedDoenloader Uninstall process as documented here:

If you remove the folders mentioned. Close and restart Safari, then go to a location where you want to download, click on the download, you should see a down arrow appear to the extreme right of the search bar. You will see a small blue progress bar appear under the down arrow as the file downloads. Once the download is complete the progress bar will disappear. Click on the little down arrow and the normal down loaded file box will appear. As soon a sclick anywhere in Safari the down loaded files display will disappear. Simply click the down arrow again to see the down loaded file list.
