Wireless Printing to Canon MP780 - HELP

I neeed help setting up a printer with a wireless print server and am getting no support from either company. Little bit of info., I'm on a powerbook g4, running OS X 10.4.3

I have just received my new printer (Canon MP780) and also got a Linksys WPS54G wireless print server. I setup the print server on my PC first....Perfect! The PC prints to it no problem.

Now on to my Mac....Grrr. I installed the driver that come with the printer. Printer can be seen no problem if hooked up directly via USB. The printer just appears in the printer list without having to add it. Wirelessly is another story. When I try to add a Printer using IPP and putting in the IP address (tells me valid and complete address), I have no clue what printer to choose. It's not listed even though I've installed the printer - no gimp driver either - nothing remotely close. Does someone know which printer to choose?

I've contacted Canon...they say sorry, no can do, this printer does not work for wireless networks...I told them...oh how funny since my PC works. When it comes to the Mac, they run scared and I get no support. So I moved on to the next logical support, so I thought.

I called Linksys. Linksys had me go to the Network Utility to see if I could Ping the printer, sure enough I can. So, my Mac is seeing the printer server. They tell me thats all the support they can give me because it's seeing the server and they don't have much support when it comes to Macintosh.

Great!! Well this doesn't help me. I don't want to run a 50 ft cord through my house each time i need to print or go hide in the closet where the printer is. Does anyone have any suggestions. I desperately need help!

You have two issues going at once...

First, driver. The driver provided by Canon (for OS X) is for USB only. The USB comm is written into the driver which means it bypasses CUPS, which means you can't use the CUPS protocols like IP printing. You have to have CUPS drivers to print via network. The only CUPS driver I know of for your printer is from www.printfab.net.

Second issue - setup to print to print server. To use the IP > LPD or IP > IPP protocols, you need to enter the print server's queue name as well as the IP address. This fact is hidden from Windows users by the setup software (which we don't have on OS X). You can find the queue name in the Linksys print server manual. It will be something like L1, P1 or lp1.

Good luck.

Thanks for the information.

First issue: I went to the Printfabs website, downloaded it but wasn't able to get it to work the way the directions say by printing to a network. I've sent an email to them, hoping they'll respond.

Second issue: I understand what your saying here, unfortunately the print server came with a trifold instruction pamplet. Not much help, but I've tried these previously.

If you know more about the PrintFab could you help?

The instructions I believe are from an older version of OS. I'm running OS 10.4.3. When I go to the Printer setup and click on Add. I get protocal, address, queue, name, location, print using. I'm unable to locate a canon printer with with printfab extenstion.

Thanks for your help!
