My nice, screaming Nvida 8800 GTS 512M does not work with Lion, it seems. I get the boot screen with the spinning circle and it freezes at a certain point. I am pretty sure the boot actually happens but the display is frozen.
Anyone else have this issue? Any suggestions?

I have the same problem. I am quite sure it's a driver problem: if you remove NVIDIA extensions (kernel extensions) Lion works but without any kind of graphic acceleration.

Try booting in safe mode.
I forgot to mention, I did that. Disk check went through but the spinning stopped at some point and it froze on the start screen.
Unfortunatly my GeForce GTS (512 MB) on my Mac Pro (1,1) doesn't seem to work well while Lion works.
Then loader icon seems to hang, but the Mac Pro is booting up without problem. So it can be a driver problem (driver -> kernel extensions) or a video card ROM/EFI problem.
I have tried to reset SMC, pram, etc but the problem is still here.

Ben, in my situation Lion boots up, what does not seem to work is the graphic card but the computer works well...probably we have to wait a new driver or to update the ROM/EFI of the video card (but I am not sure which is the right version to upload/upgrade).

did you save the Lion installer?
clone your system before upgrading?
do a full disk repair first?
I'd do a clean install of Lion on another drive.
Some problems with upgrades don't occur when doing so.
Also, any PCIe controller may need reinstall or updated driver (SI 3132 etc)
Yes, I did save it. I did clone it and I did a DiskWarrior repair (even if the diretory was ok).
I will retry to install it on another drive. I do not have any other card inside my Mac Pro, beside the 8800GTS.

I thought as much. I am debating whether its worth my time to open an Apple Case to let them know. But if its the Nvidia drivers, then they are just going to foist it unto Nvidia. I guess I will await the driver update. I am worried that Nvidia might not view this as a priority.
I don't really know...I was so happy about Lion...but I cannot use it right now. I have to downgrade my Mac Pro to Snow Leopard...I am trying to look at some solution on some forum...maybe it is just an wasy modification to some kernel extension...who knows...
I don't think this will be a priority for Apple nor for NVidia 😟

I have a MacPro2,1, which I believe uses the same card as the MacPro1,1, but the MacPro3,1 ... uses a different card, or rather a different flash version on the card. Does anyone know if the MacPro3,1 have the same issue with a 8800gts?
I've tried some odd solutions like using NVenabler, but I dont' think works on real macs. Has anyone tried using the drivers from Mac OS X 10.6.8?
Thank you mlink. Where did you find NVenabler? It's quite clear that it works only on x86 "Mac" not on real one...I have read so many forum about using NVidia (PC) card on fake "Mac"...
