FileVault failed and now I can't turn it off.

I just upgraded my MBP to Lion. I tried turning on FileVault, but after a couple of hours it reported that it had failed and I should repair my disk. I booted into the recovery partition, repaired with Disk Utility and logged back in. Now FileVault keeps reporting its failure and asking me to turn it off, but when I attempt to do that I get the message "Unable to modify a Full Disk Encryption context." Has anyone seen this before? Any thoughts on how I can turn FileVault off (and ideally back on successfully)?

I'm seeing the same thing. I have an early 2008 MBP that is running Lion. I keep getting "There was a problem enabling FileVault. Problems were encountered with the disk "Macintosh HD". Please turn off FileVault, verify and (if necessary) repair the disk with disk utility, and try enabling FileVault again." When I click the default "Turn Off FileVault", I get the error you reported.

Weird thing is, the recovery partition's disk utility showed this volume as greyed out and its status as "Locked and Unmounted". I couldn't access it at all.

To answer your first question, then, you're not the only one, but so far we're the only two reporting it. I wish I had an answer for how to resolve it. I'm hoping it's a more common problem and Apple has a fix in the works.

Same problem here. But in the second attempt, I didn't turned it off (I pressed "Cancel" instead of "Turn it off" in the popup window). Now the System Pref Pane tells me it is ON! I ran the following command in the terminal:

diskutil corestorage list

And I get this (not the "Conversion Status: Failed")!

So from here, I don;t know... When I repair my disk from a bott DVD, Disk Utility says it is OK.

More or less same issue for me, I was able to turn ON filevault and now I'm unable to turn it OFF (backward for me)

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3203278

Only thing I get in console logs is the following error

System Preferences: *** CoreStorage conversion failed with mainError: -69750; detailError: 0

And in my case when executing the corestorage list ... same issue except it's "backward" for me 🙂

So after that

I tried doing this manually

$ diskutil coreStorage revert disk1

Authentication required for reverting a locked volume

Passphrase: ***

Started CoreStorage operation on disk0s2

Error: -69749: Unable to unlock the Core Storage volume

Funny error because it shows ulocked above

So I tried to unlock it ...

$ diskutil coreStorage unlockVolume (masqued UID)

Passphrase: ***

Error beginning CoreStorage Logical Volume unlock: The target Core Storage volume is not encrypted (-69755)

So in the end ..

I'm stuck because I can't revert and unencrypt a disk that is not unlocked.

However I cannot unlock a disk that is not encrypted.

All that while the disk is shown in the list as Unlocked and Encrypted.

Encryption Status: Unlocked

Encryption Type: None

Encryption Context: Present

Conversion Status: Failed

Has Encrypted Extents: Yes

Conversion Direction: backward

And therefore I cannot do anything 🙂

This needs serious fixing Apple ... There is obviously "something wrong"

I don't know for the OP but in my case ... actually I did get some error in there after re-looking carefully

Happened while decrypting

Since then it's blocked into "Conversion Status: Failed"

I was able to resolve my problem with a workaround. I had originally upgraded from Snow Leopard with FileVault enabled. When I started seeing problems, I suspected that the versions of FileVault were conflicting. After several reboots, I was able to convince recovery mode to format the drive. It wouldn't let me touch the encrypted volume, but repartitioning the drive cleared it. A reinstall by the recovery partition, followed by a manual transfer of my data, allowed FileVault to finish encrypting successfully. Not an ideal workaround, but a quick fix. And so far, so good.

On a related note, I've been contacted about my posting, so it sounds like Apple is working on this issue. :-)

Just to inform: I had a 45 min phone call with an Apple engineer the other day, collecting MBs of data of my machine and sending it to him. He seemed to be very interested to the fact that, when booting, my Mac was asking my password before actually booting (which is the normal behavior when FileVault2 is ON). Nothing I can really say in addition to that. They are working on it, and I have no fix to propose unfortunately.

FileVault failed and now I can't turn it off.
