Google Search Keyboard Shortcut Missing in Safari

I just stumbled upon the same problem.

I loved having a single shortcut for a new search on Google opening in a new Tab.

The funny thing is that CMD + Shift + L still works in other applications (like grabbing a word out of TextEdit or a PDF in Preview)

Ran into that as well.

Work around:

Go to system preferences > keyboard > keyboard Shortcuts.

- Click the + sign to create a new shortcut

- select Safari from the Application dropdown

- Menu title: type the following operation: Search with Google (mind the capitals)

- Keyboard shortcut: type your favorite shortcut (cmd-shift-L)

This forces the shortcut down upon Safari.

edit: hm, Work around does not seem to be stable

I tried that yesterday, with a different name.
Now with the exact name, even restarted Safari... but it doesn't work 😟

Similar problem I've found but fixed. I have a broken arm and it's difficult to hold down cmd and click or do the shortcut (which doesn't work anymore), so I found a workaround based on http://rentzsch.tumblr.com/post/5794765921/search-with-google-using-chrome

It will take less than a minute to implement.

Open Automater -> Choose Service -> Find 'Run Shell Script' action and drag to workflow window -> Choose '/usr/bin/ruby' from Shell drop down menu -> type the following

require 'cgi'

`open 'http://www.google.com/search?q=#{CGI.escape(STDIN.read.chomp)}'`

Then save it with a title like "Search With Google (New Window)" and you are done. Then rather than using the shortcut, just right click the highlighted text you want to search and you can use this new service.

This works! 🙂

1. Open System Preferences.

2. Click on Keyboard.

3. Click on Keyboard Shortcuts.

4. Click the “+” to add a new shortcut (you first go to Application Shortcuts).

5. Choose “Safari” from the Application menu.

6. Type “Google Search...” (without the quotes) into the Menu Title field. Those three dots at the end are an ellipsis, you should type Option-semicolon (not three periods).

7. Press command+shift+L in the Keyboard Shortcut field.

8. Click “Add”.

9. Close and reopen Safari.

Thanks, but this is not the shortcut we're looking for. This just moves the cursor to Google search field in the toolbar. The missing shortcut we're looking for lets you highlight a word on a webpage and then command+shift+L will search for that word/phrase/etc in google in a new tab/window.

This seems to be a Safari and not a Lion problem, as it behaves the same on Snow Leopard. You might want to ask the same question on the Safari forum.

Look inside System > Keyboard [tab:Keyboard Shortcuts].

Select "Services" in the left pane and look under "Searching". The "Search With Google" service is in there. Just make sure it's checked and the keyboard combo is set correctly - since the reading list is now shift + apple + L I set mine to apple + option + G - this should be system wide - so it will work in mail instead of flagging a message!

Ahh cool yeah that works.

Well I set mine to " CMD + Shift + ; " which is right next to " L ".

Now I can still press the shortcut as easily as the old one.

Becuase the shortcut to move between tabs is control + tab, I have set my search shortcut to control + ` (the key above tab on US keyboards).

Starting with Wolf’s script, I made the script use DuckDuckGo by changing it to:

I did this to make it more bearable for me to attempt using something other than Google. Hope this helps someone else.

In Safari, I highlight the word I want to search on, then right click. You have the option of searching with Google or with Spotlight as well as looking it up in the dictionary.

OMG!!! i can't believe this forum went this far… all you have to do is make a different keyboard shortcut for "Show Reading List" and Shift CMD L will automatically start working again! Good point from the person who said to make sure that the "Search with Google" is checked in the services, that also has to be checked, but is by default.
