Lion graphics extremely slow with Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256MB

Made a clean install with Lion and it now turns out that the graphics (Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256MB) on my Core 2 Duo iMac are way to slow (or insufficient VRAM) for the Lion UI.

Especially fullscreen apps animations and opening Launchpad folders are extremely choppy. Not much fun the way it is.

I mean come on, a mac, which can play WoW pretty well should be able to push 2D Graphics around, right?

When booting up the UI is fast, but after letting the iMac on for a while or waking it from sleep the graphics are choppy again.

Anyone else having this problem?

Kersten

OK, to summarize: 10.7.3 fixes the bug with slow graphics after sleep for Macs with Radeo 2600 family. Meanwhile, Radeon families 4xxx, 5xxx and 6xxx are still affected (not all of them, only certain Mac models). Two fellas abovepointed out they still have problems with 4 and 6 generation of Radeons, and I am still have the same issue with my 5770.

The only solution I found besides using old drivers comes from hackintosh community. The solution says to change your hardware id, so this won't work on any real Mac.

I've got an iMac 27" (late 2009) with ATI Radeon HD 4850 and Diablo 3 had an open beta this weekend (last Friday until this week's Monday). Friday night when I logged in, it worked really great. I quit the game and went back on in a few hours and it was horrible. It was very very slow and still is (I can see the login screen only because I have no real beta acces, but that's slow too). Saturday night when Diablo 3 was very slow I went back to COD4 and it was slow too! But it wasn't before installing/playing the Diablo 3 so I have got no idea why... COD4 is still very slow too.

Lowered GPU performance may be caused by

1. A software that works as a display driver, like Air Display which allows you to use the screen of an external device as an additional desktop display. Noticed only on Lion. Not likely in your case, because only recently your Mac was working fine.

2. Overheating. Never noticed that with iMac however encountered it several times on Mac Books. When GPU is overheated it drops operating frequency to avoid damage. Mac Books air exhaust was clogged with cat's fur in my case. But when turned on your Mac should work fine at least several minutes before reaching critical heat levels, so it doesn't look like it either.

3. Some hardware configuration / power management issue. One way to fix it is to do SMC reset: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US . Another way is to delete current power management-related .plists; you can find instructions earlier in this thread.
