Lion graphics extremely slow with Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256MB

Made a clean install with Lion and it now turns out that the graphics (Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256MB) on my Core 2 Duo iMac are way to slow (or insufficient VRAM) for the Lion UI.

Especially fullscreen apps animations and opening Launchpad folders are extremely choppy. Not much fun the way it is.

I mean come on, a mac, which can play WoW pretty well should be able to push 2D Graphics around, right?

When booting up the UI is fast, but after letting the iMac on for a while or waking it from sleep the graphics are choppy again.

Anyone else having this problem?

Kersten

Thanks. It probably works. It's basically the same fix used in OS X 10.3 by people with unsupported NVDIA graphic cards in a PowerPC G4. Apple also fixed that, so I'm sure they will this time. The graphic drivers in Lion are not that good anyway in my opinion, even on my new iMac that shipped with Lion animation and videoplayback are sometimes a little choppy. Lion is a new system, it will get better.

My upgrade to Lion was a disaster on my Mac Pro, here was my solution.

For whatever reason my Memory sticks failed shortly after the upgrade to Lion, may be unrelated, but it was rather odd timing. I noticed the memory issue when I opened up my box to replace my graphics card - there was an error light on my FB-DIMM Slot 2 / top card.

I replaced the memory sticks, upgraded my graphics card from Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256MB to the new ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB.

My current configuration now is:

  • Mac Pro (early 2008)
  • 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
  • 6 GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
  • ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB
  • Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2

Everything is GREAT! 🙂

Slone, you are the first user with this system who claim to have it working properly in Lion. I have the same configuration, only with 4 GB of RAM. I don't have my old Radeon 2600 anymore so can't check if it is too subject to slowdowns.

Did you check performance difference before and after sleep with your new Radeon HD 5770? Because even when it's working slowly I can't guess it from the scrolling smoothness and other UI goodies. However, in any demanding graphics app the difference is dramatic.

Thanks Harkaitz! You made not only my day, but my YEAR 2011. It was sooo frustrating with this performance issue on my 24" iMac late 2008. Since I installed Lion everything was choppy and ugly after waking it from sleep. I've tried everything despite of installing older graphics drivers...

I really did spend LOTS of time on this problem and reported many bug reports, called Apple support, but didn't find a solution.

The Mac was pretty much unusable for me before your patch!

Thank you so much!
