Lion graphics extremely slow with Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256MB

Made a clean install with Lion and it now turns out that the graphics (Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256MB) on my Core 2 Duo iMac are way to slow (or insufficient VRAM) for the Lion UI.

Especially fullscreen apps animations and opening Launchpad folders are extremely choppy. Not much fun the way it is.

I mean come on, a mac, which can play WoW pretty well should be able to push 2D Graphics around, right?

When booting up the UI is fast, but after letting the iMac on for a while or waking it from sleep the graphics are choppy again.

Anyone else having this problem?

Kersten

Check to see if ATI came out with updated drivers for your graphics cards. NVIDIA cards were having similar issues with both League of Legends and Steam games. I saw on a forum for League of Legends that NVIDIA had come out with an updated driver specifically for Lion OS users. I did try checking on AMD's website to see if they could be found there so I could give you a link, but I couldn't find anything. So, perhaps there might be a way to manually check for an update for that driver specifically or email someone at AMD about it?

I am having the same problem with my 24" iMac Early 2008 ATI Radeon 2600 Por 256MB vram, its pretty abd when the Intel GMA 64MB on my Mac Mini running lions runs more smoothly than the ATI HD card, seriously rollercoster tycoon 3 is freezing like no tommorow on the iMac, runs smooth on an Old 2006 Mac Mini with Intel 64MB GMA card. There both fresh installs of lion and rollercoster tycoon 3, APPLE please fix. Minimizing and maximizing also freezes on the imac but not the mini. 😟

Also restarting the computer, and turning off sleep is a temp fix to the problem.

A lot of posts here about older systems - I have a new one (Mac Book Pro 8,3) and may also be having graphics driver problems. In my case I'm running 3d modeling/design programs that I have been running into critical errors with. I contacted the Rhino for Mac development team and they think there is a bug in the lion graphics driver as their beta users on lion have to turn off openGL completely in order to run stably, whereas older OSX versions are much more stable. Also I gave AutoCad for MAC a try and it didn't last through the 30 day trial... not only did it crash somewhat often when you would pan for too long, but with 4 days left to go in the trial it decided that it can't even launch anymore...

so apple folks, a graphics driver update would be much appreciated!
