is there any idea, how to fax hardware-based with Lion?
It's not without arrogance that Apple does not support its own fax-modem any longer unter 10.7 and I look for an alternative that does the fax-job with Lion on my iMacs or Macbook...

Radendokto, I just read that the the fax software was 32-bit, and Lion is 64-bit, and therefore doesn't work. Moreover, Apple has discontinued selling and supporting the USB Fax. I'm in the same boat as you.
There are threads on this topic in the SnowLeopard Printing forum, and some of those thread suggest alternatives.

With the Zoom 3095 my iMac 2011 faxes perfectly under Lion... I even can use the AppleModem's cord connecting the Zoom to my fritzbox.
Nevertheless, Apple's arrogance ignoring the needs for a 64bit-driver for Apple's own modem is pretty annoying!

I am at a loss. Under all versions of OS X u til 10.7, I could fax from within apps such as Acrobat and Word using FAXstf Pro and an Apple USB Modem. When I found that the Apple modem did not work, I obtained and have connected a US Robotics 56K USB Modem that others have said would work.
Unfortunately, I now find that FAXstf does not work under 10.7 and Smith Micro has discontinued FAXstf and seems to have no plans for an upgrade.
Am I going to have to buy a fax machine or an all-in-one printer?
Any advice would be appreciated.

Those Apple Modems are very old. Apple does not support them on Lion.

That said, many Fax Modems will work. I seem the Zoom most frequenetly mentioned.
... but if the USR-Modem works under Lion - what I, using the Zoom 3095 do not know - what are You looking for?
Faxing under Lion is as easy as under SnowLeo directly out of every App's printing dialogue... I stopped using FaxSTF long years ago...

How did you set it up? We purchased one at Staples today and I can't seem to get the settings right within Lion's network preferences.

I hope by now you've found a solution... But incase you haven't or should this come in handy to anyone else the Zoom 3095 IS the way to fax using the new OS... However, the directions that come in the box are not the ones that helped me install the software I was MUCH more successful with what the company supplied online oddly enough the directions were different. Go to http://www.zoomtel.com/products/dial_up_external_usb.html and click on 'Product Support' towards the top of the page (in line with Overview) Scroll down to 'Documentation' (written in Red). Then click on:

Follow the instructions and toss the ones that came in the box! I never post reviews but it is very unfair of Apple to treat all of their faithful customers this way and leave them in the dark.

Thanks, this is just what I was looking for. When I get a fax modem, all I have to do is add a Fax printer in printers.
I was able to use my Apple USB modem under my VMWare Fusion Windows virtual desktop running on an iMac using Lion 10.7.4 to send faxes. I'm running Windows XP in the virtual desktop and easily added the modem after I plugged it in on the windows side.
