Where has the 'bounce email' feature gone from Lion?

Mail works OK after upgrade to LIon, I have set it up in classic mode for now. However, I can't find the 'bounce email' feature. This used to be a good way to reduce spam.

Please Apple, let me have this feature back.

It is generally a huge misunderstanding that when you bounce spam back, it's actually returning to the spammer. In most cases, since the "from" is either a spoofed/faked address or some poor sucker's bot-netted computer, all you're accompishing by bouncing is sending the spam on its merry way to some other poor bugger, just like you, who has absolutely no idea why it's being bounced. Spammer's love bounce.

The best thing to do with spam is to just delete it, without opening it and remove it from the server. You might try setting up a filter, but that is usually easily cirumvented.

Pity - I still like the idea of ditching irritating mail this way!

That's like saying you like the idea of throwing garbage you find on your lawn on to your neighbor's lawn, because it's easy, when, in fact, the real garbage thrower lives miles away.

But I do realize you already understand how "unfriendly" bounce is.

I edited my post, above, to include a sentence that shows I recognize this. "But I do realize you already understand how "unfriendly" bounce is." I understood you got the point and you were only saying you wished it could be that easy. We all do. Seems we pretty much just have to live with spam.

You might be interested in knowing that spam, in general, appears to be decreasing in volume. Seems it's getting harder for spammers to get through server filters and make any money at it. And maybe, only maybe, a few of the Eastern European countries, where it mostly originates, are occasionally cracking down on the perps.

I used the bouce feature mainly for email that I received from existing senders, including university tech departments and certain professional organisations, who either continued to send me email despite my request to take me off their lists, or had obtained my email address somehow from other professional organisations without my explicit agreement.

It seems logical to me that "bounce" is useless for standard spam, but I liked the feature for the above mentioned use.

This feature has been around since Mac OS X 10.0 and I was using it actively in every version of Mac OS X. It was one of the key reasons why I used Apple Mail instead of Web-Mail for my GMail, Yahoo!, and MobileMe accounts among others.

A lot of people mis-understand bounce mail as it were.

If a friend of mine has their address stolen or a virus infection on their system which is often the case when I use this feature, I want them to get bounce messages from me so they will call me and I, as a IT support person, can explain to them why they're getting bounced and to either clean up their system or remove me from their address book.

90% of the time when someone gets a Bounce and didn't send the email THIS is the case people. Windows users and Mac users alike should be using anti-virus software. Mac users ask themselves why? Think of it this way, do you want to spread previously infected files you received from others to other people that may not be using a Mac and thereby increasing a potential infection? I think not.

It's nice to know spam mail is on the decline. Unsolicited Commercial Email however may not be.

Every once in awhile it's a nice thing to be able to bounce to an ex-girlfriend ex-wife, ex-boyfriend, ex-husband, ex-employer, etc. For these instances the Bounce Message feature was consistent and worked well.

Don't mis-understand, there is no karma thing at play here, we're talkig about unsolicited email and spam for the most part. I have no problem bouncing it, I am using a computer with all the tools at my disposal. I read thousands of emails a week. If someone gives me effective tools like Postini and SpamSieve I use them. I even use Email accounts that have automated filtering systems behind them to help reduce and question the email that I receive to ensure it's from someone I care to get email from and that it was addressed directly to me in some fashion.

I honestly do not give a crap about anyone who generates spam and uce for a living whether they're in East Europe, Russia, Africa, or anywhere else. This is coming from someone who has on more than one occasion worked for national Internet Service Providers and now works for a large enterprise. The cost of spam is paid for by your internet fees and cell phone bills. Now that is not necessarily going to decrease when Spam decreases, however I paid for the connectivity and bandwidth for a reason and it's my choice on how I use it.

I would highly appreciate it if the tools that were previously provided in Apple Mail under Mac OS X 10.6, namely the Bounce Message feature were restored. It should be my choice to enable and use this feature for my own intentions. If Apple wants to improve it or give some ridiculous legal disclaimer fine, don't care. Just give me back the simple tool "that just works"

Thank you!
