Slow wake up after installing lion (Macbook Pro 2010)

Hi there,

After installing Lion, my Macbook Pro 15" takes a lot longer to wake up from sleep than before (taking 10 or more seconds, instead of 2 seconds in Snow Leopard).

Am I the only one seeing this? I did a normal install (upgrade from SL) from the Mac App store. RAM is 8 GB.

Thanks!

I have an Early MacBook Pro, 2.3 Ghz, Intel Core i7 with stock 4 GB memory.

As soon as I installed Lion to this machine I noticed this slow start-up issue.

It's really bad if I completely drain my battery, plug in, then try to wake from sleep. Takes forever to respond to anything. Even with my old MacBook Pro (late '09?) no matter what it would always be instant wake-up.

Anyone out there noticing this slow response 'especially' when recovering 'after' a battery drain?

Sleep seems to be fine otherwise, it's just after the battery drains! maybe I need to start a knew discussion?

Hi Robert,

do you know standart value for hibernatemode on MBA?

I have updated from SL to Lion my Late 2010 MBA 13" 1.86GHZ, 2GB RAM and time to time have some problems with wakeup (no wakeup at all) and hibernate doesn't work on very low battery.

I investigated that pmset -g on my MBA displays hibernatemode 1, but man pmset explains that correct values for hibernatemode are 0, 3, 25

What is original value of hibernatemode on MBA - Lion?

I too have problems with extremely slow wake up. Not from the sleep function but when i set my screen to "rest" (i have a hot corner for this) it takes about ten secounds for it to come to life again. Open windows are then locked for another 10 secounds. The sleep function works fine though...

I have a summer 2011 MBP 15" with Lion.

There is also the same delay when i connect my MBP to my cinema display. In SL the screens would turn blue instantly when i connected the screen. Now I wait for at least 20 secounds, then the blue screens and then another ten secounds of frozen windows.

Anyone else experienced this?

I, too am having this problem.

My MacBook Pro (1 week old, 4GB stock RAM, Lion 10.7.2, 2.5 GHz Intel Core i7, 1333MHz DDR3), is waking up much slower than my 2006 PowerBook G4 (5+ years old, 1GB RAM with lower memory slot not even functioning, Tiger 10.4.11).

Ever since first start-up of computer a week ago, when it sleeps ("sleep" or "hibernate", I don't know), it is very slow to wake up (like 3-10 seconds). My OLD computer (above) takes 1-4 seconds. Sometimes the new MBP doesn't wake up at all, just gives me the spinning color wheel, I wait for minutes, wheel keeps spinning, so I then have to hold power button down to restart.

All this with NOTHING new installed on computer (i.e. software/apps, drivers, plug-ins), no hardware attached. Just the computer out of the box.

Help?!!??!

At work, I have a 13" MBP dual core for about a year and a half that I upgraded to Lion, and it works fine with no problem waking up. I just got a 15" quad core and I'm having lots of problems with slow wake-up. When the screen dims before going to sleep, it still works fine, but the screen doesn't brighten again until about 10 seconds later. If it goes to sleep, waking up takes 10-20 seconds as well. Airport takes a long time to connect too.

The old computer without the problem has the following settings when I do "pmset -g" from the terminal prompt:

Active Profiles:

Battery Power 1*

AC Power -1

Currently in use:

halfdim 1

sms 1

panicrestart 157680000

hibernatefile /var/vm/sleepimage

disksleep 10

sleep 10

hibernatemode 3

ttyskeepawake 1

displaysleep 2

acwake 0

lidwake 1

The new computer with the problem has these settings:

Active Profiles:

Battery Power -1

AC Power -1*

Currently in use:

standbydelay 4200

standby 0

womp 1

halfdim 1

panicrestart 157680000

gpuswitch 2

hibernatefile /var/vm/sleepimage

sms 1

networkoversleep 0

disksleep 10

sleep 180

hibernatemode 3

ttyskeepawake 1

displaysleep 10

acwake 0

lidwake 1

I marked the settings that are different in bold. Notice the computer with the problem has standbydelay, standby, womp and gpuswitch shown where the other one doesn't. Does that spark any ideas? Any idea how to get rid of those from the list so I could see if getting the settings the same might make it all better?

I had the same problem but finally found the fix (for my machine, anyway). After about a week of going through post after post, I checked in Software Update one more time to see if maybe a 10.7.3 came out yet... and I noticed that the EFI Firmware Update 2.3 came up again - I had previously "installed" this on a couple occasions, and it would disappear from the list for a little while, then pop up again randomly.

This time, instead, I downloaded the package directly from Apple.com: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1450 and installed it manually. Rebooted the machine manually, and it let out a long beep, then did some installing on the Apple boot screen.

After boot, I opened Chrome and hit apple.com. Closed the lid, left it for abouta minute, then opened up the lid and voila, immediate Internet.

I think you're on to something! Someone from work today mentioned that I should do a software update and then just keep doing software updates until it says you're up to date. I do remember a firmware update coming down before. That might have when things started to go haywire too. Anyway, I just did a software update and it did another firmware update, and then did software update again and something else came down. But after two cycles, I'm up to date. Now when the screen dims, it comes back immediately when I move the mouse instead of taking 15-20 seconds like it was. And it recovers from sleep in just a few seconds. Another thing I noticed before is that the fan was running all the time before (almost sounded like my HP laptop...shudder) and the battery power was getting sucked dry in no time. Right now, it's nice and silent. Of course my HP is nearby, so I probably couldn't hear it over that anyway 🙂.

Thanks for your help! I'll definitely try installing the update directly if the problem returns.

I had the same problem. I even upgraded my hard drive, as it was failing and I thought it caused the problem. However, after upgrading the drive, the problem persisted. It was driving me nuts to waite for all the app to start working again and for internet to be up. I tried many solutions posted online, nothing worked. I reinstalled Lion and nothing.

What did help me, was turning off the computer. Then turn in back on and at the same time press and hold "D" (try to press "D" before grey screen appears). Hold "D" untill the computer starts, It could take up to a minute. While holding, I notice "folder" icon on my grey screen with question mark inside. I kept holding "D" until my comp started up. I didn't bother to check if that fixed the problem. However, after I closed the lid on my macbook and opened it later on in a few hours I saw a miracle :-) It literally took 2 seconds for every app and internet to be up and running. I couldn't believe it, but it helped. Try it, it might help you too.
