A terrible new operating system debut. Hours to download and a buggy install. Crashed during reboot and laptop reboots to a recovery screen and wont progress further. I now have bricked £1000 laptop that I cant use. Every day Apple you charge your customers more and give them less.

iBook G4, Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Lion bricked mine (MPB 13, Middle 2010) too - a lot of apps and the sound buttons doesn't work, now i've tried to go back to 10.6.8 --> no chance, installation (from dvd) quits with an unexpected error and reboots the mac ...

my last chance is now to make a full backup from my time machine

Come on Apple. Stop coining in the money in California and help out the people who have lost their ability to work. Your Genius Bars are over run with problems

There have been many problem reports, as should be expected with a .0 release. My mac mini was bricked. Had I not made a complete bootable backup of its (SnowLeo) drive I would probably be breaking something now.

time machine backup does good work - my MBP is now again on 10.6.8 and EVERYTHING works fine

LION Update was a big big mistake (for me)... i waste a lot of time ... thx time machine i lost no data ...

"Works for me,why don't you try install it again in see may the problem gone and you get lion."

--> maybe in a few weeks when i have a lot of time (more than 24 hours ).

i have downloaded the installer 3 times before i was able to install, then the installation itself failed 2 times and at the end a lot of my apps (including terminal, mail and itunes) were crashing every time ... and the worst thing:  every time i used the sound buttons lion wos rebooting / i was getting the logon screen.

maybe it's an option to install lion from a dvd (extracting from the downloaded installer package) ?

No issues whatsoever on my 2011 Macbook Pro 13" i7 with

the Lion upgrade.  Before any upgrade you should:

    1.  Use Disk Utility from install DVD or some other disk

maintenance utility (I use Disk Warrior) and make sure

you HD is free from any issues.  Anything corrupt in the

directories or on the disk can rear it's ugly head with

          an OS update.

    2.  Repair permissions on the boot HD.

If you still have issues after upgrading, try starting up in safe

mode.  If it then boots, there is some start up app, extension,

or driver that is causing the problem.

Yep - my MacBook Pro appears to also be a BRICK. Here we go, trying to start up on the Snow Leopard DVD, looking for latest Time Machine back up, yada yada yada.

    Are we having fun yet?

My advice - DON'T GET LION YET!!!!!

I read this online review and got SUCKED IN, unfortunately....

ps BTW, I'm getting this gray start up screen, looks like a woven gray table cloth, but no apple symbols, no start up, no nuthin'....

  • BigTallGuy Level 1 (0 points)

This is worse than I thought - MBP after Lion gnawed on it will not boot on DVD or USB or respond in any way other than to show the 'gray tablecloth'.

***? My day (and possibly week) is now officially ruined...

http://  I experienced unbelievable problems after downloading and  installing  Lion.  With the help of Apple this solved all the problems.  Works great now!  I had the gray tablecloth screen as well.  Check it out.

not bricked, but no sound, no speakers, no solution other then going back with time machine.  Snow lep was such an easy upgrade.  This upgrade reminds me of microsoft.  Worst thing all the geeks sites keep singing Lion's praises., no mention of the corruption it is causing.

    Reinstall.  See link.

Hi, I have been an Apple user for just over a year now, prior to that I remember well, the issues with Windows 95, 98, 98SE, 2000, Vista, XP and the latest Windows Saviour (NOT) Windows 7. Forgive me if the order is not quite correct!!

With Mac I have only used   OS X "SL"  and have had few problems with it, apart from the windows equivalent of the dreaded blue screen which was down to a hard drive issue. Now it appears Apple are taking a leaf out of the Windows book and releasing software for the general user/buyer to quality check, fault find, refine, report and most important from an Apple point of view is PAY FOR.

Why do all of the software writers feel the need to change thing just for the **** of it, when what they are changing is not broken in the first place, could it be to justify their salaries I wonder?

The issues purchasers of Lion are having is enough for many to ask the question WHY? Is PC a better option, what about the new Google operating system?

I am sure that a lot of prospective buyers of Lion will be like me and not bothering with it, until Apple drop support for SL.

Come on Apple sort out the problems with your software and its compatibility issues !!

BTW, the link above is bad, it has two http's in it. So delete a 'http' and it will work.

Nevertheless, the advice on the linked page (to use Command R and so forth) has not worked for me.

I even formatted a USB drive in Lion (on my MacBook Air which fortunately I did NOT 'upgrade' to Lion) and connected it to my dead MBP - still only the 'gray tablecloth', drive will not boot and I cannot access my MBP hard drive at all. However, the USB drive works fine on the MacBook Air running Lion.

Frack it, that's many hours of frustration, no end in sight...
