I've upgraded to Lion & Safari has been corrupted - how can I remove it & reinstall it please?

A website has managed to capture Safari so I don't have access to menu options - it looks like malware or something similar - ran the virus checker, but still not able to use Safari...

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

Hi

Thanks for your reply.

It has taken over my whole Safari, I can't choose an address or enter any other site, the only option is to click the OK button (which I haven't done). The Safari bookmarks aren't mine either, so could it be an image?

My son was updating my iTunes image library at the time (which probably doesn't help).

Stupidly, I erased my backup disk because it was full - I should've gone back into Time Machine & restored at an earlier point...

Yours hopefully,

Tony

try the following

can you check if safari still works in another user account?

If so

Go back to the affected account

delete the ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.safari.plist

Note: the user library is hidden in Lion. So make sure to click on finder > press and hold Option > click Go on the top menu > choose library

If the above does not work. Go into safe mode

restart you computer while holding the shift key.

In safe mode, launch safari and perform a reset safari and empty cache

you can do this by clicking the safari on the top menu

Thanks, but still no luck with either of those ideas. I can't access the menu options in safe mode either.

- which menu are you referring to?so in safe mode. When you launch safari, do you see Safari in the top menu?when you click that do you see reset safari and empty cache?

I don't have any other user accounts on the computer - maybe I should start a new account?

- Yes, its part of what I have suggested. To see if this is a system wide issue or a user specific

Ok. Thanks.

I have now set up a new user & it can access Safari without the malware issue.

Does this mean I need to transfer all my files (pictures, documents etc...) to my new user ID, or is there a way to delete the malware issue now we know where it resides, or download a programme that can find & destroy the malware?

I appreciate your help.

Kind regards

Method 1

Transferring all your files from one account to another is indeed a Solution but may take time because of the transfer process

Method 2

if you wish to stick to your old account then we need to start deleting some corrupted files. Its a shot in the dark but at least you get to keep your old account

again it all boils down to which method you'd like to go from here. 2nd method is a bit intrusive since we will delete files and plists.

I've upgraded to Lion & Safari has been corrupted - how can I remove it & reinstall it please?
