Macbook Pro Increasing DDR Ram from 4GB to 8GB

Ok, so after the fact, I suspect that I trusted a salesperson who thought he could promise a little more than was available. How do I increase the DDR Ram from 4GB to 8GB in a Macbook Pro? I have just purchased a Macbook Pro that came with 4GB and told them that I would get it if I could increase the Ram, they of course said no problem. Here is the really stupid part, they even included 2 prepackaged memory cards to install.... Which I assumed they would do.

Have I lost my mind or is it possible to do this and if so will my warranties still apply? They are an authorized Apple Retailer.

ACK!!!!! This may be the killer point, it is a 13.3 inch display. Too small to install additional ram? I see other comments, but they seem to be about larger machines. I guess I am trying to figure out if I should return the memory for a refund and scold the guy for selling me something that could not be done. Or maybe I am in luck and just have to find someone to install the memory boards....

Please be kind, it has been a very long time since I bought a puter, and I am switching from 25 years of PC use to Mac.

RAM memory on a MacBook Pro is regarded as a user-serviceable part, so yes, you can upgrade it without invalidating your warranty. The warranty won't apply to the parts you added (unless they're Apple branded), but will still apply to everything else that it covers.

You will need the right screwdriver to undo the tiny screws on the base. There are instructions for how to access the memory slots and remove / insert cards within your MBP manual.

Edit: for 2011 MBP models, the screwdriver needs to have a Phillips 00 x 50mm head
