My problem was in fact Livescribe crashing, once I disabled it (and then Livescribe finally released a Lion compatible version) my problem went away.

I also allowed my machine to complete its Spotlight index.  If Spotlight is actively indexing (pulsing black dot inside the little magnifying glass), this is most likely your issue, you're just going to have to let it finish, or severely restrict what it's indexing.

I did this and also completely deleted Dropbox and restarted and that seems to have solved it, fingers crossed. I have a feeling it was Dropbox related...

I also had suspected DropBox (which I minimally used), and stopping its use seemed to help. I also switched from the buggy ExpanDrive to the free and more stable MacFusion for ssh mounts.

This thread has been really useful, and I would just like to confirm that, for me at least, this problem all seems to be Dropbox-related.

opendirectoryd, launchd and occasionally the kernel task were all running at 35-100% for extended periods of time. Quitting Dropbox seems to stop the problem, and so far it is totally consistent (turn it back on, problem comes back, turn it back off, problem goes away again).

I have also seen this explanation, which suggests it is to do with symlinks in Dropbox. I suspect many of us are using symlinks and Dropbox to sync our Documents folder and others.

I think Dropbox are working on it though, or at least it seems to be the theme of this thread:

It occurs to me this whole thing may be a kind of vicious circle, where I create a load of file (by using a Git repository), and Dropbox and Spotlight both go nuts indexing, and Spotlight also indexes a load of Dropbox-related files etc etc.

I'm having this problem with opendirectory taking up 100% CPU, just got my Mac Air and i tried removing dropbox completley and that didn't do anything. Any ideas?

I also had Time Machine taking too long. Part of that problem was that at one point I had a very large number of small files, and Time Machine indexed them all. Not only did I have to remove the files, but I also had to clear the time machine backups because it was re-processing millions of files.

I haven't set up Time Machine so I assume it's not turned on

if you have Dropbox installed , then delete it

    it solved my problem

Hello. This is not probably the right place to post this question but I think I will do it anyway.

I started to observe my kernel log / system konsole for what's going on and I saw opendirectoryd - has made 9 logs of starting something and here's log outputs (first & last) these logs are under "fax" and that's why I get interested, becouse I do not have any attempts & software what would need this options:

I'm trying to debug why this process has started, no problems with softwares / installs. Everything works fine.

But I think my computer got hacked some time ago. After that I installed e.g. Little Snitch Network monitor (still using demo version) and Avira virus scanner.

No log / other unusual behavior after that.

Any suggestions where to look / where to dig?
