after lion 10.7 no audio sound

I have a mid 2009 MBP, it worked great on 10.6.8, but after installed 10.7, the audio icon gray out, and showing "The selected device has no output control".

It does has sound when boot up, and sound effect is no problem, only the output does not work.

I have to connect my earphone into the jack, and the error message of "The selected device has no output control", disappreared. After that unplug the earphone, everything works. However, once I reboot, the problem remains.

I brought it for service, and they claimed it was a software issue and they could not do anything. They suggested me to reinstall the Lion again.

When I rolled up to 10.6.8 everything worked, but once upgraded to 10.7, the problem was back.

I have reinstalled three times, however, the problem remains.

Any suggestion ?

I had the sam problem on my 2011 MPB, but after plugging and unplugging my earplugs I was able to control the sound level (up/down) again.

If you are using digital output (either the optical connection or an HDMI cable) then there is no volume control available no matter what you do. Volume is an analog control only available for built-in speakers or old school headphone connection.

Same issue on my 2010 MBP 13.

One way to solve the issue temporally when you don't have any earphone around:

1. Restart into Safe mode (holding "shift")

2. Restart to normal mode, the sound will be clickable again.

It doesn't fix the issue, and it takes long time to restart into safe mode. 😟

You might want to check your console log for 'Sound', and see what errors were logged.

I'm running into similar problems with my Late 2009 Mac Mini, after upgrading to Lion. The audio device driver gets errors while attempting to initialize. Found these messages in the console log:

10/17/11 6:54:28.000 AM kernel Sound assertion "0 != result" failed in AppleHDADriver at line 1018 goto Exit

10/17/11 6:54:28.000 AM kernel Sound assertion "!me->fKextResourceLoaded" failed in AppleHDADriver at line 993 goto Exit

Looks like an audio device driver problem to me.

Booting into safe mode then a shutdown worked for me. One note the sound icon on the menu bar was greyed out for me as well as no sound device detected. All ok now.
