ive tried setting the privacy on my drive and back again, repairing all permissions etc and all maintenance in "main menu"
Ive also tried the following
1) Using the mdutil command-line utility in Terminal, turn off indexing for each of your drives. Example: |

When you install Lion SpotLight does re-index everything. It took overnight to finish. Why not let it run until it's done. Is it giving you and estimate of the time left?
After it finished indexing everything was fine. And Mail search works better.

I left it 2 nights to see if it would finish....the estimate changes each time it restarts, from 50 mins to 30 mins, and even at one point 3 days!
That does sound frustrating. It wasn't impacting on my performance, so I didn't even notice it until I tried to figure out why Mail search wasn't working well.
When I finally noticed it it said "9 hours remaining" and so I went to sleep and it was done when I got up. And I have nothing in my privacy settings and every checkbox is selected.
Maybe your attempts to change settings are causing it to start over?

I'm getting to that point too. It's re-indexing again today, 18 hours to go :S. Everything I've tried so far has failed, I think I may downgrade (for this reason among others).
Just today mine started doing it too. Any ideas?
Thought I should at least add that this is happening to me too. And the degradation of performance is extremely extreme. I have had to turn spotlight off to get work done, but of course i can't search for an email ....

I'll get spinning rainbow wheel when activating (not starting but simply working in Word 2011 at all). A force restart is required. Spotlight then reinexes and it takes hours.
SMC reset. PRAM reset. I have also tried logging out to a different account.
Even if Word had a macros virus, why would that cause Spotlight to reindex? I'm going to try Pages if this continues but I suspect that Microsoft Office 2011 needs a Lion update (before the end of THIS month), and so does Lion.
DO NOT USE INTEGO VIRUS BARRIER WITH LION.
If you are getting Lion kernel panics, IVB may be the reason. I supect the new Lion indexing technology conflicts with IVB even though Intego say VB6 is Lion ready.
since updating to lion, my spotlight is constantly indexing.
