Constant Kernel panics since Lion. Macbook pro Apr 2010 model

just got a kernel panic when writing this So here it is again...

Hi I would quite frequently (once a day) receive kernel panics before upgrading to Lion. I took to be "repaired" and was told there is nothing wrong! This very much upset me as the machine cost $2500+ is a i7 macbook pro and is my work machine. It is very hard for me to be apart from my laptop as i do all my development work on it. So being without for a week took a lot of preparation... anyway after getting it back and continued to get "black screen of deaths" i thought maybe some magical fix could exist within the upgrade to Lion. Well today my laptop (by looking at the /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/ has had a kernel panic 10 times! (now 11 times...)

It doesn't matter what i am doing, i will be using my machine then BAM black screen and i must hard reboot. I have actually been able to replicate the problem reliably under google chrome browser. Every single time i save a file the file will complete then KP. This didn't use to do this prior to Lion. No idea why lion would KP after a simple File save...

To say i'm upset with this is a massive understatement. I will be telling all my family, friends and IT work mates/friends not to buy apple. I find their front of "genius" bar a big sham. I have read of many issues with people having this problem of macbook pro's getting kernel panics and it is obviously linked to issues with Nvidia video cards but Apple refuses to admit to a problem in manufacturing. I don't like this attitude. I also don't agree that people should only receive 12 months warrantee on a product which costs $2500+ that is simply abserd. Just to put things in perspective. I've just had floating floorboards installed in my unit... it cost $2200AUD to install 29suare meters of floor boards... labor + materials and it has 25 years, yes 25 YEARS warranty.

Below are kernel panics before and after Lion

anyway here are the latest kernel panics:

I am also having this problem. I also have MacBook Pro 6,2 (15" i7 2.6Ghz).

I think it's tied to switching from intergrated graphics to the nvidia and specifically vause by the nVidia driver (which historically have always sucked) as the file com.apple.NVDAResman is the first thing that gets pointed at when the crash happens. Quite annoying I know but no doubt fixable with an update soon enough.

Strangely this problem only started happening for me once I upgraded to the GM release of Lion, earlier Developer releases didn't have the problem.

I find it particularly crashey when I login, I assume it uses Intergrated GFX on that screen then switches to the main gpu just after.

I think a partial fix is disabling automatic graphics switching (under Energy Saver in System Preferences) and keeping the MacBook plugged in when you're using it.

Hopefully theres enough of us sending error reports so Apple are aware of it.

actually what has helped me a lot since my post for this is downloading gfxcardstatus here (http://codykrieger.com/gfxCardStatus). Once installed it appears in the task bar, make sure to click "integrated only" and within "preferences > General" make sure to click "Load gfxCardStatus on Startup" this should vastly improve the problem with crashing as you will no longer be switching to the nvidia card.

Fingers crossed apple will find a solution.

Also i wanted to mention although Lion has caused my april 2010 i7 macbookpro to become almost unusable without gfxcardstatus forcing integrated graphics. It was ALSO having intermittent freezes just like this even in snow leopard. I'm hoping that due to this problem become so prevelant after lion it will lead to the root cause of the problem becoming solved

Cheers

Exact same propblem here since the installation of Lion. Getting that 'Lion Black Screen Of Death' almost once a day.

Come on Apple, you should invest more on your QA department and less in your 'natural' scrolling swat-team!

He he natural-scrolling. I am all confused now. Heu... going down or up?

OH. MY. GOD. This has been happening NON-STOP since I upgraded to Lion and I cannot believe Apple would release such a piece of **** to their customers (only swear word for this post—I'm done).

I have MULTIPLE panics a day, many of them related to either Adium or when I'm using iTunes. Usually, I'll be just listening to something on iTunes and then my computer black-screens. The knuckleheads at the Apple Store told me it might be because my laptop is too hot, but that's nonsense, since I will be in a nice cool area, and this will still happen.

I'm going to try that gfxcardstatus and I will keep my fingers crossed.

I have still not upgraded to Lion. I have been getting these kernel panics for some time now. I even did a time machine backup and then a complete clean load of my system. I also stopped using Chrome and went to Firefox because the latest relase of Firefox does not use the nVidia graphics. I thought I had it licked until last night when I hooked up to an external monitor then within like 30 seconds, bam... black screen. The crash report yet again has nVidia written all over it. So there is something wrong with the nVidia driver, and not just for Lion users.

My mbp 15" (2010) started to freeze to an unusable degree after Lion upgrade; it was bearable with gfxstatus on Snow Leopard. Walked in to genius bar in HK and book an appointment. They ran a video test and found the logic board faulty. Will replace it for free within 3 days at NO CHARGE! Strongly suggest anyone with similar problem to do the same.

Constant Kernel panics since Lion. Macbook pro Apr 2010 model
