Please help me I connected my iPod to my computer and clicked update it extracted the software and now it is stuck on the screen with the Apple logo and a empty bar at the bottom what should I do as I can't turn it off or restore because my computer isn't picking it up any more.

I would try following the instructions here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808 To put your iPod Touch into recovery mode. This may leave your iPod firmware corrupted and it may not be able to boot but, as long as iTunes recognises that it's in recovery mode you can safely restore it to the iOS 4.3.4 firmware and then restore your most recent backup.
