How do I set Lion to show a DVD/CD on the desktop when they are inserted. I tried going through System Prefs / CDs & DVDs.
I am cataloging DVD backups and it is annoying to have to go through finder for each disc, when before I could just drag the icon from the desktop into the catalog.
Also, is it normal in Lion not to even see the main hard drive? I can see it in Lion.

It's in the Finder preferences under the "General" section.

You can set this feature trhough the preferences in Finder. Ther you can choose what will be shown on your desktop. Hope it helps!

Related to that, I don't see any drives in the Finder Window, even though the Finder Preferences / Sidebar tab shows Devices / Hard Disks checked. The CDs/DVDs show up and so does my iDisk. I set the Devices to show My Mac Pro and I can then double click on that to get to my hard drive.
I guess I have to modify some of my habits. 😉

You can drag the hard drive from the Devices section to your favorites section if that help you out.
Sorry for being forgetful. Its been 2 years since I reinstalled everything and can't remember all the "small customization" over the years. I am also a former Windows user who switched in 2008. Always learning 🙂 Thanks again for all the help on this topic.
