Four-finger swipe between desktops does not work with wireless magic trackpad

Count me in as another grateful use who thanks you for this work around.

Am I missing something here?

I've upgraded to Lion (MacPro 2x2.66 Duo-Core Intel) and bought a new trackpad.

So far I've been able to move the mouse around on the screen, but not much else - no clicking, dragging or scrolling. If I click on the desktop it brings up the left-click-like contextual menu, so the pad is working.

However, your references here to Preferences > trackpad > more gestures makes no sense to me.

My trackpad preferences pane has no such tab. See screenshot:

So... Am I missing something?

You do seem to be missing something. Even in Snow Leopard my Trackpad Prefs contained demo videos and more options than what yours is showing.

Like most others, I'm also having trouble with the 3- or 4-finger L/R swiping to cycle through full screen apps. I can, however, switch between desktops (useless for me, and the feature states "full-screen apps"). I've tried switching between the number of fingers, but the function still does not work.

Sorry, Eddie, I should note that I am using a MacBook Pro 15. I do not know what the preferences pane would look like for a wireless trackpad.

Are you sure that you have upgraded to Lion? I know it sounds impossibly simple, but that System Preferences - Trackpad screen in your screenshot is definitely from Leopard or Snow Leopard. Perhaps the install for the OS upgrade didn't go through, for whatever reason. Your software version indicated in "About This Mac" should be 10.7.

Downloaded Lion and re-installed twice - everytime the same.

My computer meets the published requirements, but I wonder if its just not up to the job.

Bought in December 2006, it was the first intel MacPro (MacPro 1,1)

I'm going to give in - there'll be a nice new Magic Trackpad on eBay soon!

I, like you, have found that this keeps getting bugged. Four finger horizontal works fine when I toggle it but after a reboot I have to redo that to get it back. Not a good time. Recently started happening, maybe with the 10.7.1 update or whatever.

I just saw this problem with a new Magic Trackpad and 10.7.3. Beware, toggling to three-finger and back turns off the "Three finger drag" feature. At first I thought the two features were mutually exclusive, but now I seem to be able to have all options turned on again. I haven't yet tried a reboot.

I can report that as of 6/28/12, this is not fixed by apple. The stop-gap measure still works. But after re-boot, it must be repeated. Come on apple!

As of July 28, 2012, on Mountain Lion, this bug still exists for me.

Just my 2 cents: After following the instructions above (thanks for that), the fix does not work until I do a 4 finger swipe FIRST on the MBP track pad. Then it works on the Magic Trackpad.

Still not working in Mountain Lion? Come on Apple, what about fixing it for all recent OS?

I'm having the same problem - it switches between desktops instead of applications. I don't use different desktops so I'd much rather it do what it says it is supposed to do.

Not sure if we are talking about the same thing here. As far as I know, there are no gestures that let you switch between applications. Only between full screen applications as described in the preferences
