With snow leopard, you could swipe four fingers up the clear everything out and you could see your desktop, now it just does mission control, which is OK, but I want to be able to clear everything and get to my desktop. Is there some kind of shortcut or button I can use for this?

I believe it is now the four finger spread, kind of like a zoom in.
It the 4 finger spread on the trackpad or FN F11 on the keyboard. You can also set up an active corner to do it.
