I contacted Kensington regarding this issue and the reply sounded as if there was no intention of upgrading the software. Their tech-support is outsourced, so the grammar is a little off:

Thank you for contacting Kensington Technical Support. We understand that you would like to program the buttons on the mouse model 72127. We regret to inform you that your mouse cannot be programmed on a Mac 10.7 operating system. However the MouseWorks software is not compatible on Mac. We would like to inform you that Kensington Mouseworks have been discontinued in 2006 and in mean while there were many updates in Mac OS. In this regard, we would like to inform you that Kensington has no software compatible for Windows 7 In this regard, we regret to inform you that, we do not have any plan to upgrade Mouseworks software and also there is no patch to fix the issue. We apologize for any inconvenience caused. Thank you. Kensington Computer Products Group Regards, Nazia Parveen

Bummer, but I would guess that there is a genius out there somewhere that can find a patch to fix this. Until then...

I recently upgraded to Lion, and indeed the old MouseWorks control panel wouldn't work, nor will any Mouseworks downloadable that I could find on their site. My old trackball happens to have just failed today, so I bought a new Expert Mouse (model 64325) to replace it. The included MouseWorks installer also failed to work in Lion. But, on the Kensington web site, I downloaded a TrackballWorks controller, and that *does* work in Lion, and allows me to set the buttons and scrolling on the new trackball as much as I need to at least. Hope this helps. -- Noone in particular. :-)

I'm glad that Trackball Works has done the trick for other users (of Expert Mouse, etc), but for users of the Kensington PilotMouse Optical (Model #72127) and Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, this doesn't seem to fix the problem.

In System Preferences, MouseWorks allows you to update software, but apparently there is no update after Mouseworks 3.0. System Preferences says that the driver needs to be updated.

I have an older Kensington Expert Mose Pro and Trackball does not work on it. But, USB Overdrive X does. It is shareware, $20, but it is cheaper than a new multi-button trackball mouse. All of the buttons are programmable with different kind of clicks, including launching files or apps. The only thing it doesn't do that I really miss from Mouseworks is my pop-up menu of shortcuts and keystrokes. I have a newer Kensington Expert Trackball device at my office and it works with Trackball Works but Trackball Works isn't much better than the shareware.

Trackball Works definitely works with the Expert Mouse with the circulor ring. That's my office set up. The older Expert Mouse Pro with four buttons, a scroll wheel and six specialty buttons does not work with Trackball Works. I wish it did because that would save me the $20. Besides, in my opinion, it is the best trackball/mouse Kensington has ever made.

Hello all,

I as well just upgraded to Lion and like the rest of you, my Mouseworks is no longer supported. I have an old Kensington Optical Elite (Model #72121) which i love. It works on the Lion just plugging it in, but the Mouseworks settings do not. I have tried the two fixes listed above with completely uninstalling the Mouseworks and reinstalling, and further tried the TrackWorks 1.0 route, and it stated i dont have a trackball device plugged in.

If anyone else has a fix or a work around on this issue to help me out, i would appreciate it.
