iMac with Lion not waking after overnight sleep

Since upgrading to Lion a few days ago, my iMac (2010) won't wake up with magic keypad swipe, button press, spacebar or any other key. Works fine and wakes fine when used periodically during the day, but is locked tight upon first use in the AM. The only thing that works is a hard power off and reboot. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Hi myc5,

"I can connect a USB keyboard and mouse to login"

Lucky you! :-)

When I had issues (pls. see Jan 17, 2012 6:34 PM) VNC was the _only_ way.

I do not have problems since.

But: I am forced to NOT use my trackpad. :-( Lion and Mountain Lion is pretty dull w/o a trackpad, though. :-(

I have not tired ML, and REALLY hope there will not be such issues, though I am VERY sceptic about this.

I need my trackpad back, now it only lays in my drawer. The poor thing...

Have a nice weekend!

I just bought a mid 2011 27" iMac i7 3.1GHz with 16GB RAM, and was fine for two months. I'm not sure what caused this problem to start, but about a week ago, it started being stuck in sleep mode every morning. I don't own a usb mouse so I can't test to see if that would allow me to wake the computer up. I have to hold the power button down and hard boot to get into OS X - every day!!

Why did this randomly start happening? I've purchased and installed a few things: the Korg Legacy Digital Collection (virtual keyboard), M-Tron Pro (virtual keyboard), and Melodyne Studio 3 (pitch correction software). I can't imagine that installing these things would cause this issue, but other than that, I've been running Lion 10.7.3, with only Logic 9.1.6 from the app store and MS Office 2011 installed, as this is my digital audio workstation.

I tried instaling the iMac EFI Firmware Update 1.9 yesterday, which was just released on Feb 12, 2012, but that didn't fix the problem - my iMac was DOA yet again this morning.

I'm almost to the point of booting into recovery mode and seeing if reinstalling Lion, Logic, and my plugins from scratch will correct. Apple please fix this!

Same result here as Tech World services. I too have a few posts about the same issue. My imac 2009 does not wake from sleep. No idea what is causing it. I am starting to think it may have something to do with my external hard drive and time machine??? Not sure. I will disconnect it for a while and repost. Even though my imac went to sleep for well over 24hrs and has restarted with no problems. It will sometimes go for weeks. Then out of the blue....dead. I have a bluetooth logictech keyboard, magic mouse. So all the people posting about the trackpad causing the problem....that can't be the answer as I do not have a track pad. :-)

I have to scan the posts again, but has anyone tried a fresh install of lion? I did the upgrade via the app store and I've always wondered if that has anything to do with it?

Thought I'd post my experiences with this problem, and what fixed it for me. My symptoms:

After every wake from sleep the network was unavailable to Safari, Mail etc, even though it looked like the network was up according to iStat Menus, Network Prefs etc.

After a couple of minutes, according to Hardware Growler, my IP address was released and re-acquired. After that, everything worked.

Killing mDNSResponder during the initial period got things working, although the IP address was still re-acquired after 2 or 3 minutes.

This problem started happening suddenly for me. Then I realised that I had been testing my Epson flatbed scanner with Lion and it was still turned on. It's connected via Firewire through a Firewire hub. Believe it or not, turning off the scanner cured the problem! This is 100% repeatable. Scanner on, no network after sleep. Scanner off, everything's fine.

Go figure!

This is so strange. Just as randomly as the problem started, it resolved itself last week. My iMac has been waking up from touching the bluetooth keyboard every morning for over a week, like the lockup problem that lasted two to three weeks never even happened. Apple did release some software updates last week, but I don't think any of them were for OS X specifically. So weird. I'll try to keep an eye on any updates or software apps that I install that coincide with the problem returning in the future...

Given that Apple acknowledged this prolem months ago and have not fixed it to now. Does anybody expect a solution before Snow Lion if at all.

I must say I am very disappointed in Apple's response to this issue, in particular, and generally in their support of older machines, and when I say older I mean a year or two old. When I paid for and installed Lion my iMac machine was under 2 years old yet the response from Apple on some of the niggling issues (like this one) runnng Lion has been less than stellar. Compare this with my recently acquired Air which runs perfectly on Lion, even with a bluetooth mouse.

Perhaps a statement from Apple on their long term support policy of new software in older machines would be in order?

The big question for me is will my "old" machines work better on Snow Lion or will they be relegated to the cluttered scrap heap of progress and corporate greed.

But the point is that it IS frequent for many of us. My expectation is that when I return to a slept machine I will be able to continue where I left off. As it is I have to reboot several times a week, this means anyopen files have to be recovered and saved and there have been occasions where I have had to recover databases on Fusion sessions. For an OS which has moved to an "always on" model with auto versioning (something else that does not work, on servers at least) this is just unnaceptable.

If it has always been a problem then this is even worse as it should have been fixed by now. Other OS's do not suffer these issues (Windows 7, Linux and eved IOS) so why should the up market OSX suffer from them.

Since moving to Apple in 2009 (because I wanted to know what all the fuss was about) I have been amazed at how tolerant Apple users are of such appaling service.

P.S. what is the fuss about Apple? Great hardware and good software ideas badly implemented, compared to Microsoft, massive compatability with various hardware and boring but stable apps. The cost of making the Apple move has been enormous (cash and hassle) and if I had known I would not have moved. I still love the innovation of apple but sometimes, when I want to just get some work done, I can hate them.

We had absolutely no problems waking our Imac from sleep until we loaded Lion, the problem has occured immediately after loading Lion, the symptoms are identical to so many others on here, so i think in out case we can almost certaily say that the fault lay with the installation of Lion. Our I mac stands alone & has nothing else plugged into it so there is nowhere else to look.

I agree; my problem only started after loading Lion. It only occurs on my Imac; at work we use mainly Mac Minis and I also have a Macbook. It doesn't happen with those. The problem is intermittent. The only thing different that I'm using on my Imac is an app to cool down the Imac as it seems to run hot: the app is smcFanControl. I may deactivate it to see whether that makes a difference.

Thanks, i guess anything is worth a try, however i can categorically say that nothing has changed on our Imac since installing Lion & the problem didn't occur beforehand, We haven't downloaded the app you mentioned for SMC/F/C so that is a no go for us. I also updated our Mac Pro, MBP & Mac Book to Lion at the same time as the I Mac & so far we have had no issues with the other machines. Our I mac has been totally faultless since we purchased it 2 years ago apart from this post sleep problem since the Lion install.
