iMac with Lion not waking after overnight sleep

Since upgrading to Lion a few days ago, my iMac (2010) won't wake up with magic keypad swipe, button press, spacebar or any other key. Works fine and wakes fine when used periodically during the day, but is locked tight upon first use in the AM. The only thing that works is a hard power off and reboot. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Hi Kristian,

Sounds interesting. I had thought early on that bluetooth might have something to do with the problem. In my 24 iMac days, the problem seems to be coincident with using a BT keyboard. I think a bit further about this as you suggested. One note, I do have a USB keyboard. When my computer will not wake, if I plug in the USB keyboard it still will not wake.

For all,

I had this problem awhile back with my iMac 24 (Early 2009, iMac 9,1) under both Snow Leopard (all updates) and Lion.

At that time I had an Apple brand bluetooth keyboard, mouse and trackpad. Based on the discussion then I stopped using the trackpad.

The problem went away and has to date not returned.

I realize this isn't the solution for everyone, but if you have multiple bluetooth devices connected to your iMac, try dropping them one at a time and see if that fixes the problem.

Guys,

I know this is a very long thread , but you are covering old ground here.

There a few anomalies but basically we know this about the problem.

It is Bluetooth related and usually requires at least one Bluetooth device to appear

USB is involved too, possibly because of the close electronic relationship between Bluetooth & USB (shared chips)

Adding a USB keyboard allows you to do very little (unless you use a USB mouse as well) because the issue makes the iMac unstable and does not allow you to Quit apps or shutdown even when you can get some level of access (I know beacuse I have one)

Apple have been aware of the problem since a few weeks after Lion was realeased and have done nothing to try and fix it af far as we know.

I moved to the iMac in 2009 and the honeymoon lasted until Lion arrived and everything went down hill (stupid new features like AutoSave that won't work on shares, this hang issue ...) and the latest is my display is dying View the full discussion

and Apple think its my fault by running my iMac in difficult environmental conditions (a european office environment). If it wasn't for my love affair with my Mac Air I think it would be back to the PC. What I hate most is this planned obsolesence on devices over 2 years old.

Mine works fine now! I had this same issue once I upgraded to Lion. It has since stopped all together. I let my track pad battery die and just use my magic mouse. I make sure I don't leave a USB plugged in either. For the past 6-7 months the not waking from sleep is not an issue. Make sure you get the updates Apple releases if you haven't checked for any. Sometimes it doesn't automatically check I noticed. Good luck to everyone. Glad to have my reliable iMac back!!

I should mention that I have a half-dozen USB devices connected, some via a powered USB hub. I haven't seen USB influencing the problem; just Bluetooth.

To igs: yes, old ground but new people continue to ask. It's unfortunate that Apple hasn't fixed the problem.

And if you go back through this thread there are some people for whom removing a Bluetooth trackpad (or other Bluetooth device) doesn't fix the problem.

Caveat emptor, etc...

Same problem here. However, my laptop slept for a couple hours today and then would not wake up and so I guess it only takes an hour or two for the problem to occur (laptop closed).

I really hate having to reboot the laptop every time to use it. It's rough on the system to keep doing that.

I just turned screen saver to never as a guess but previous threads say no dice. Snow leopard worked fine.

I had this exact same problem after I bought a Magic Trackpad. At some point I realised that it might be related to this trackpad and stopped using it. Since then no more freezing on wakeup. But now, half a year later, I thought to give the trackpad another try. Just today I started using it again and on the same day I have again a frozen iMac on wake up from sleep!

I think it is clear by now that the Trackpad has a negative effect on the bluetooth stack. How can we really get apple to fix this? How can you report a bug to them?

I haven't used an exteral trackpad. I just use the laptop as-is. I found a work-around which is to manually put the laptop to sleep. I can then close the lip to keep dust out.

I haven't tried connecting my phone to the laptop to see if it would wake up. I think I found that the laptop does not sleep when I close the lid, and then if I open to lid it is in a zombie mode where I have to reboot.

I plan to use manual sleep from here on out until the OS next release.

Ok folks I have waited a week to say this and I have to watch what I say for a number of reasons..

if you read back through this thread all my posts have mentioned how I have an iMac that's never recovered from sleep properly since I upgraded to lion .

I have a Magic mouse and magic trackpad and everytime this happens I am unable to power down the mac properly or regain Internet access until I reboot.

I don't believe that this problem will be fixed by lion.

I am a developer and got access last week to the gm seed of mountain lion.

All I would like to say is to offer some hope to everyone with this problem!!!

I know it's early yet as I've only been testing this a week but since upgrading to mountain lion, I put back into service my magic mouse and trackpad and sleep the pc many times a day..

After a week - not one problem has raised its head - this is unheard of for me..

All I can say is I promise to report back in a week and update you with my progress and success .

Should I have even one occorance , I will visit here I promise !

When sleeping in lion, I was always aware of the system waking up at random moments and then powering down again - I have not noticed this yet since the upgrade..

My fingers are firmly crossed here...

I can finally enjoy Using my mac again as the ease of use sleep gives is a huge reason into opinion why macs are the ultimate computers ...

Hi Steve, from Techworld Services,

Thank you VERY much for the feedback.

I'm actively monitoring all related topics, but saw no solution. I have tried everything I could think of. Please check back for a summery of mine at

Update:

Since Jan 17, 2012 6:31 PM (see above link) I have the magic trackpad turned OFF, and use the BT mouse and KB that was originally shipped with my late 2009 iMac.

No problem, since then.

One more remark: This COULD be (note: not "is") a late 2009 iMac issue.

Cheers,

Georgio
